I shuddered as I looked around my cold, empty cell.  I rocked back and forth on my knees, repeating one word in my head.  Mate, mate, mate.  He was my mate.

How can this possibly be?  I asked myself. Obviously, I wasn't answered.

But we were mates. He was my mate. The male I had always loved was mine forever. But there was another problem.

I looked down at my stomach and smiled sadly.
I knew, deep down, that if anyone knew we were mates, they'd kill us.  Probably me first.  And my power, all of it, would become his.  And it would destroy him, from inside out.

And that wasn't the worst part. The life growing inside my belly was at stake.

I didn't even know if the bond had snapped into place for him. I mean, I knew males went crazy with the bond. It was kind of obvious.

I had already made my mate and child a promise. They just didn't know it. As long as they were safe, I didn't care what happened to me.

For years, I stayed quiet in The Tower. I let them torture me. All for them. My baby and my love. And if my tormentors knew how deep our bond went, we would be dead before you could say "Illyrian". So I made sure they wouldn't find out, and bided my time.
