Adalyne was out of the room getting dinner with Marcus, Elysia was out by herself at the library, looking over her textbooks, and Ray had showed up half an hour ago when he said he would at eight o'clock. Sara was working with Ray on their assignment and I sat there, in my lavender bungee chair at my desk, waiting for Corwin to show up like he said he would though I had very little hope that he would show at this point.
"He's already half an hour late," I groaned, "He's unreliable."
"Maybe he got caught up in something Kase, you never know what's going on in someone life until they tell you." Sara offered.
"He kissed the back of your hand! How can you be on his side!"
"He's a gentleman Kase, it didn't mean anything." Sara said, still trying to look at the brightside.
"He's flirting with you!" I argued, attempting to make her see it my way.
"And I'm gay! Unable to succumb to his useless charms! How many times have I told you in the last 36 hours that I'M GAY." Sara said back.
"Well I still don't appreciate his obvious efforts to get together with you." I sighed, exasperated.
"Not to intervene, " Ray said, "But I think you should look in your doorway."
Sara and I both looked up to the doorway at the same time to see Corwin, just standing there, not even trying to hide the smirk on his face, "Unable to succumb to my charms? Is that a challenge?" he said to Sara, before turning his gaze to me, "If you dislike me so much, why did you invite me over to your dorm?"
"I didn't invite you, you invited yourself, and for your information-"
"Bup! I'm tired of hearing your voice already." Corwin said, enjoying the reaction he was getting out of me.
"You are half an hour late, you show up to MY dorm room and then tell ME you don't like MY voice? Well I don't like your attitude, or your personality or the way you speak to me. You're so full of yourself, just shut up!" I got up out of my chair and walked towards him as I spoke, "I hate working with you already you asshole. If you're not going to be nice then get out!"
Corwin ducked into the room, "I gotta say, I don't think I've ever felt more welcome in another's space. You're so kind to have offered me a visit to your humble abode so early in our relationship."
Having enough of it, I stormed out of the room to make sure I wouldn't hit him. I cursed him in my head. How in the world could someone be that obnoxious? How am I going to make sure I don't kill him. He's probably in my room now, flirting away with Sara while I'm sitting out here in the hallway about to blow a fuse.
I had just sat down outside the dorm room when I received a tap on the top of my head.
"Hey there sunshine, your friends in there brought it to my attention that I'd upset you and I'd like to apologize."
"Go on," I mumbled, not yet lifting my head.
"I am so sorry that you are so uptight and perfectionistic that you can't even have kind, caring people in the same room with you."
I lifted my head to look at him. "And I am so so so sorry that you are so egotistical and think everything is all about you. I'm so sorry you think it's okay to flirt with taken girls. And I am so sorry that you think us working together is going to work out." I said before plopping my head back down.
"Little bitch." Corwin huffed under his breath as he walked off. His footsteps stopped before too long and then a paper ball hit me before his footsteps continued down the hall.
When I heard the elevator doors close, I picked up the paper and un-crinkled the ball. Of course he carries sticky notes.
'Meet me in the top floor of the library in half an hour. It doesn't close til midnight and I'm determined to get a decent grade on this.'
I sighed and got up off the floor, stumbling back into the dorm since my left leg had fallen asleep, "How do you guys feel about moving to the library? Apparently I'm meeting Corwin there in half an hour." I said.
"Of course, but we all get to work at the same table." Sara said, laying out her conditions on the matter.
"Well get your shoes on then, I don't know where that is."
"Don't worry about it," Ray pointed out, "It's only about a ten minute walk from here."
"How do you know that?" Sara asked, "Freshman have only been here since yesterday morning."
"I know that because I'm a junior. I've been going here for three years now."
Both Sara and I were dumbfounded. "You're a junior?" we asked, practically in unison.
"Heh, yeah. I know I look young for my age." Ray said, turning a bit red and rubbing the back of his neck as strands of his hair fell down from the top of his head so they laid in front of his eyes. "Get your shoes on guys, we should get some ice cream beforehand. I need something sweet."
We all looked at each other for a moment before moving on, pulling our shoes onto our feet and walking out the door.
"Anywhere specific you want ice cream from, Ray?" Sara asked him, carrying a turquoise backpack full of notebooks on her back.
"Maybe Creamery? It's a little dessert shop on campus. And it's on the way there."
"Sounds good to me." I chimed in.
I don't know whether to be jealous of Ray or be happy that Sara's making friends. I also don't know how LGBTQ+ people flock to each other before we even come out. It's kind of ridiculous.
"Earth to Kasey!" Sara yelled from next to me as she intertwined our fingers. The elevator was cold and almost breezy with annoying elevator music playing in the background.
"Error 404," I replied, "There is no Kasey within the server at this moment."
"Come on babe." Sara butt in again, "What's going on?"
"I hate him!" I burst out, "I really fucking hate him and I don't want to go see him, I just want to sit in my comfy bungee chair in the dorms and stay there!"
"Hey, calm down." she said, attempting to brush a piece of my curly hair behind my ear without success.
"He's insufferable. Intolerable. Intolerant!"
The elevator doors opened back up and a group of girls from our floor were standing there. I saw them come up on moving day.
Sara pulled me out of the elevator by my hand and then we were outside in the brisk winds of the harsh Connecticut winter. I shivered, wishing I had put on a sweater before we left since I had taken off my sweatshirt from earlier.
"Fuck it's cold out here!" I yelled and in response Sara wrapped her arm around my shoulders and we just kept walking until Creamery's lights were in view from where we were standing. Then it started snowing and we broke into a sprint, running the rest of the way there.
Hope you guys enjoyed these encounters with the insidious enemy! I'll be back with more tomorrow!
