After I talked to Justin I headed back to my mom's house. I peeked my head in mom's room just to make sure she was okay. She was hanging off the bed with a wine glass dripping sweet red wine onto the floor. I took the glass from her hand and used all my might to adjust her more comfortably. I put covers on her and cleaned up the wine. I cut the lights off and shut her door.
I head to the room across from my mother's to check on my little sister, Olive. She was sitting on her bed with her AirPods in both ears.
"Hey, Olive." I say. She still hasn't looked up from her phone."HEY OLIVE!" I yell.
She looked up abruptly, slightly frightened. "Girl you can't be sneaking up on me like that! Wassup sis?"
"Sorry girl I tried to get your attention but you were wrapped up in your phone. How was school today?" I asked as I sat on her bed.
"I didn't go today. I needed a mental health day. Mom fucking lost it last night." She sighs.
"What happened?" I was out of the loop because I was at the club late last night.
"I came out to get some food and she starts fussing at me about how I'm "fast like your sister" and how she wishes at least one of us was more like her than dad. I knew she was drunk so I was trying not to pay her any mind but then she got up in my face. So I told her to back the fuck up and then she slapped me. And Mia I'm fed the fuck up so I slapped her ass back."
"Olive you did what?!"
"I slapped her ass back, Mia. I'm tired of her thinking because she's my mother she can keep slapping me around because she drunk. We ended up fighting and then she went into her room and hasn't come out since. And I'm glad." Olive said, matter-of-factly.
"I'm so sorry that happened, Olive. I really need to get her some help." I sigh.
"Mia you can't help an addict that don't want to help themself. We learned that already." Olive was referring to the first time we sent her to rehab. She stayed for 28 hours before she checked herself out and went missing for a few days before we even knew she checked herself out.
"I know.. but I can't just give up on her. I'm going over to Sammy's house for the night. Do you want to come? To get away from here?" I ask, concerned for her. Things mom says when she's drunk don't get to me anymore. I know she's sick.
"As long as I don't hear y'all fucking all night!" She laughed.
"Cover your ears girl." I laughed. I went to my room to pack a bag while she packed hers. I texted Sammy telling him Olive was coming and we were ready.
"I'm here." Sammy said in a text. I had planned to tell the both of them about my choice.
Olive and I hopped into his Range and we were on our way to his crib. I decided since we were all together that now would be a good time to tell them about my decision. I turned down the music.
"Mia that was my song!" Olive said.
I rolled my eyes. "Anyways, I got a new job, y'all."
"Oh yeah? Congratulations, Mimi. Where at?" Sammy asked.
You don't even wanna know.
"Well... it's as an adult film actress." I say, looking away.
"Porn?" Olive says from the backseat. Sammy is silent. I can see his jaw flexing. I wonder what he's thinking.
"Yes, porn."
"You know I support you in whatever you want to do but why this?"
"The club just isn't enough. Mom just lost her job and you are growing up, meaning you have lots of needs and it's not cheap. I have to be the one to pull all the weight around the house. I want us to live comfortably."
Sammy still hasn't said a word.
"My birthday's in a few weeks I can just get a job."
"I know, Olive. But any job you get is going to be minimum wage and I want you to be able to keep your money. This is just something I'm going to try out. It's nothing permanent."
"I mean, it's your body. As long as you're happy."
"Sammy? What do you think?" I finally asked him.
"We gon' talk about this when we get inside." He turns the music back up.
I don't know if I'm ready for what he's going to say.
