Three days ago, K had been at a sleepover with a group of her friends and some other girls. They had been playing truth or dare with a hairbrush. The third spin landed on K, and she had been asked to choose: truth or dare. Being the little rebel she was, K chose dare. It had been her best friend who suggested that she spend a week in shark forest all by herself.

K had been angry at the time; she did not like forests, and didn't like having no internet. She had protested against her friend's decision, but the other girls supported it.

So K arrived at shark forest that Sunday morning at about 9 o' clock in her best friend's bike, forced to listen to her constant reminders of the sharks ("the sharks're gunna eat K! The sharks're gunna eat K!). Her best friend left her there and said "hey! Don't look so depressed. It's only a gunna be a week, and you're so sure that the sharks don't exist!" K didn't reply, but made a face. Her best friend smiled and said "I'll come and pick you up this Saturday with the money and meal ready!" And with a wink she added "if you're still alive, that is" and took off down the road.

K angrily kicked a pebble by her feet, and began her hike into the forest. Terrestrial Sharks don't exist, she thought. So the only issue would be the weather and the tent (K hated tents). At least those were the only problems she could think of, besides no internet, and boredom.

She walked deeper and deeper into the forest, pushing fallen trunks and branches, and jumping over patches of mud and whatnot. It was difficult, she decided, for someone who wasn't physically very fit and had a backpack on their shoulders. It was difficult for someone like her, she decided miserably. One of the sleepover girls had very graciously flung a map at her during the sleepover, and K kept referring to it from time to time, marking the paths and turns she was taking. She stumbled a bit from time to time, because the 'paths' were barely visible--trees and thorny shrubs had taken over, leaving little space for walking.

The forest was huge, and had security towers posted at its north, south, east and west. There was also a huge fence surrounding the entire forest, with gates scattered across it for visitors like K, along with a small number of unused guard stations posted near some of the gates.

She followed one of the few paths shown on her map, and soon reached a small clearing. She paused and looked around at the trees and mud. Then she lifted her huge backpack off of her aching shoulders and set it down on the ground near her feet. She stretched , and inhaled the crisp air, and thought perfect just as a leaf smacked into her face.

Brushing it away forcefully, she quickly began setting up her tent. She wasn't very good at it, and fell into the mud more than once during the process. But finally after an hour or so, she was soon inside the tent sitting on a pile of thin blankets, admiring the blue glow the tent gave in the sunlight.

Other than the mud, dust, and bugs (which she'd recently noticed), K thought the whole thing was rather pleasant, and quite comfortable. The air here didn't reek of smoke, and that was what she liked the best about this place. She wasn't even mad at her friends for suggesting the dare anymore! She was enjoying herself, and she was going to get paid 500 dollars and a happy meal for it...

Smiling satisfactedly, K settled in to reading one of the many comic books she had brought with her.
