Selfish

"I can't believe you're finishing school today. My first baby will finally graduate!" my mother exclaimed cheerfully as she place the dress that I'm going to wear for my graduation on my bed.

"Naku po, Ma'am, naaalala ko pa nung makulit na bata pa itong si Euphie Baby natin!" Yaya Bebe, who's also inside my room, uttered in delight.

She's going to assist my mother in doing my make-up for today. Habang si Pinyang naman ay siyang nag-aayos ng buhok ko. Naisip lang nila na huwag nang kumuha ng make-up artist at gawing bonding time ang pag-aayos sa akin.

My mom started putting the primer on my face. "I still can't accept that Silvan and you didn't work out.."

Kinuha naman ng kapatid ko ang hair curler at nagsimulang gamitin ito sa buhok ko. Pagkatapos ay nilalagyan din ng mga rollers para tumagal ang kulot. "Ma, clearly, Ate wasn't interested in Silvan. Move on na rin." mapanlokong pakli ng kapatid.

Napatahimik ang aking ina. Sandali siyang nawalan ng imik hanggang sa lumiwanag ang mukha nito at lumingon sa akin.

"How about going on blind dates, sweetie? What do you think?"

She must be pretty bummed out that I haven't dated anyone since the day I was born. At least Pinyang gets some dating rumours, while I have none.

Umiling ako. "I don't like going on dates with guys I don't even know. It makes me feel uncomfortable."

My mom raised her brows. "Ano iyong gusto mo? Mga sampung taon mo nang kilala, ganon?"

Iniabot ko ang iced coffee na nasa dresser at uminom gamit ang straw na kasama rito upang hindi masira ang make-up ko.

"Parang wala naman siyang childhood friend na lalaki na ganoon niya na katagal kila-- wait! Si Kuya Heathcliffe! My original OTP!" my sister shrieked with so much energy.

Nasamid ako sa iniinom kong kape.

I was caught off guard. My mom handed some tissue and started patting my back as I cough.

"That's impossible, Pinyang. They don't even talk anymore."

Oh we do, Mom. We even do things far beyond talking.

Mas lalo pa ata akong napaubo sa tugon ng ina ko. Hindi ko kinakaya ang usapan na ito.

Bumagsak ang balikat ng kapatid ko at nawala ang ngiti niya sa labi. "Oo nga pala.."

They continued to prep me for my graduation. Once my sister was done with my hair, she decided to do my nails. When they finished, they left me alone so I could put on the dress.

My parents were actually planning to buy me some luxurious graduation gift but since I'll feel bad again for spending so much money on me, sinabi ko nalang na yung dress nalang ang gift nila sa akin.

It's a white Versace tulle long-sleeves bodycon dress. Sa tabi nito'y pearl earrings na siyang susuotin ko ngayong araw. There was also a pearl necklace there but I opted to wear my usual golden necklace instead.

I started untangling my robe. Habang sinusuot ang aking bodycon dress ay biglang tumunog ang aking Ipad. Kinuha ko ito binasa ang mensahe roon.
