Reagan High started at eight-thirty and let out at three. So, I was rudely awakened by my alarm clock at seven-forty. That gave me just enough time to get dressed, worry about how the day would turn out, contemplate strategies if things today took a turn for the worse, and finally eat breakfast.
I threw on my brown shirt and a pair of blue jeans that I had forgotten I had brought from home. Then I brushed my hair and my teeth. I decided that today would be a good day, but if that didn’t turn out to be so, I would just move on. Lastly, I went down to meet Freddy, Emma, and Amy at the breakfast table. We had the simple breakfast of cereal. Well, Honey Nut Cheerios, to be more exact.
“So, are you excited for your first day, Kayla?” Amy asked. I heard Emma snicker. “Something you’d like to share, Emma?”
“I’m not sure anyone is ‘excited’ for school. I mean-”
“I kind of am,” I said, interrupting Emma. She glared at me, but Amy nodded for me to continue. “I’m not excited for school, but I’m excited to see what this school is like.”
“Well, it sucks. That’s what it’s like.” Emma mumbled.
Amy dropped her spoon in her ceral loudly. I could tell she was annoyed.
“Living room,” Amy said sternly. Emma pretended not to hear her. “Now!”
The two of them left to have a chat.
“Don’t listen to Emma. Regan High isn’t that bad. Especially compared to some of the other schools around the district.” Freddy said.
“That’s good to know.”
“It’ll be fine. No worries. Besides, you have me.”
“And you have me,” I said.
Freddy smiled.
Amy dropped the three of us off at my new school. I was so nervous. I really wanted my first day to go well.
I had to go immediately to the office to get my new schedule, and thankfully, Amy had gotten us there a little early. Freddy gladly showed me to the office, and she waited for me the whole time.
I barely had time to look over my schedule before Freddy snatched it from me. We walked back out of the office, and then Freddy shrieked. I looked at her curiously.
“What is it?” I asked.
Freddy smiled at me.
“You have the exact same schedule as I do!” she exclaimed.
I grabbed the paper back from Freddy.
“You’re kidding me,” I retorted. Freddy shook her head.
“Lucky” was a word that I barely knew existed. If you could sum me up in a few words, “lucky” wouldn’t be one of them. But now, I guess I had to admit, luck had come my way.
Freddy and I had math first. I didn’t mind that because I could get it out of the way. Then came science, P.E., English, history, and finally drama. A ten minute break was in between math and science, and then lunch was after P.E. and before English.
“Classes are only about forty minutes,” Freddy said. “And all the teachers are really, really nice.”
“That’s good. My last batch of teachers made it so obvious that they would rather be anywhere else than at school.”
Freddy laughed.
“No worries. Our teachers are great.”
Freddy and I headed to room 103 for math. I found out our teacher’s name was Mr. Derron. He was a young man, with short blonde hair. I went right up to his desk.
