In the morning, I woke up right at seven. Thankfully, without the aid of my alarm clock. I turned if off just to make sure it wouldn’t go off, and then I got up and got dressed.
Freddy’s door was shut as I passed it in the hall. I stopped and knocked on it.
“Freddy, are you okay?” I asked. “Are you up?”
“Yeah. I’m fine. Come on in.” Freddy answered.
I entered Freddy’s room. Freddy was kneeling on the floor in front of a bunch of papers that were strewn all over the place.
“What happened?” I asked, bending down to help Freddy clean up.
“My binder sort of came undone,” she answered.
Together, Freddy and I put the papers back into the binder, and then I helped her organize her school work. After that, we headed downstairs to join Amy and Emma for a very quick breakfast. But we still had time to sit down at the table and chat for just a bit.
“So, girls, what do you have going on today?” Amy asked.
“Nothing much,” I answered.
“Yeah. All the teachers are just wrapping up for the year.” Freddy added.
“Cool. Are you three ready to go?”
“Yeah,” Emma, Freddy, and I all replied.
We all grabbed our backpacks, and then got into Amy’s truck. She dropped off us at school just before the bell rang, leaving Freddy and I and Emma to dash to our classes.
Freddy and I took our seats in math, and then faced Mr. Derron. He gave the class a smile, and then pulled out a DVD from behind his back. The class cheered because it was yet another movie day.
“Are the teachers always like this at the end of the year?” I asked Freddy.
“Most of them run out of lesson plans, and we always finish the books early, so…”
“We get stuck watching movies. Cool.”
Freddy and I laughed softly.
The rest of the day went on basically the same. All day, we just watched movies. When Freddy and I got home, we didn’t have any homework, but we found Amy home early.
“Hey, guys,” she said.
“What are you doing here, Amy?”
“I had a few cancellations, so, I just came home. Oh, Kayla, Jackson called me and said he’ll pick you up at eight.”
Then, Amy said she had to run out to the store. So, that just left Emma, Freddy, and me.
“So, what do we want to do?” Freddy asked.
“I’m going to go to my room,” Emma mumbled.
“All right,” Freddy said softly.
Emma went straight up to her room, and then Freddy and I just looked at each other. Of course, since the time was coming near, Billy’s funeral was in the front of my mind. Freddy silently asked me if I was okay.
“I’m fine,” I replied.
“You sure?”
I nodded.
“I’m tired. I think I’m going to go lie down for a little bit.”
“Okay,” Freddy answered.
Freddy and I both went up the stairs to our rooms, and then I proceeded to my room. I dug out a picture of Billy that was still buried in my suitcase, and then I sat down on the floor with it in my hands.
