'Charity'
I was typing out my homework with my electronic notetaker, when I heard someone knock on the door.
"Come in! " I shouted, still focused on my homework.
These days doing homework is extra work because I'm trying remember the information as well as how to put it down in braille. Needless to say, my head hurts from all this thinking.
"A lady is at the door asking for you. Do you know a Jenny Wilder?" My mom asked.
My head perked up, and suddenly homework was the last thing on my mind. I wonder why Jenny is here?
"Yes, she visited the rehabilitation center a few weeks ago. Her son is in my class. Is she still here?" I asked.
"Yes I told her to wait until I talked to you."
"I'll come down with you." I stood up and followed my mom downstairs.
"Hello Charity it's nice to see you again." Jenny said happily.
"Nice seeing you too." I joked. My mom nudge me gently from the side.
"Oh...I... Uh" Jenny was speechless poor thing.
"Excuse my daughters weird sense of humor." My mom said apologeticly.
Jenny laughed lightly putting me at ease. I didn't mean to make the situation awkward. But I have a natural skill for making people uncomfortable unfortunately.
"It's alright, I find it refreshing that she can joke about it. I came by because tomorrow will be Jeston's first day at the rehabilitation center and I'm really nervous for him. He is still on edge about being in a room full of strangers he can hardly see. I was wondering Charity if you could just stay by his side that day. I heard from one if the staff that tomorrow is your off day. But it would really put my mind at ease of you were there. I think it would put Jeston at ease as well." Jenny said anxiously.
Tomorrow was my day off because I was swamped with unfinished homework. But Jenny seemed really nervous about sending Jeston there alone. I felt bad, especially since I'm the one who talked him into it in the first place.
"Sorry but Charity has alot of homework she needs to finish, she can't go to the centre tomorrow." Mom replied, before me.
"I understand." Jenny said sadly.
"Mom..." I moved my hand around until I felt my moms arm, I moved my hand down until I found her hand.
"please can I go." I asked quietly.
I rarely ask for anything. I heard my mom sigh.
"You promise the minute you get back you'll finish all your homework? " I smiled at her reply.
Internally I was dreading the amount of homework I would need to finish.
I'm sure it would be worth it to help out a friend."Promise." I said confidently.
"Amazing! Thank you both so much. I'll see you tomorrow, okay Charity." Jenny said, sounding beyond relived.
************************************The next day my mom dropped me off at the centre. It was weird being here on my off day. I have no responsibilities no classes.
I stood at the entrance of the building shifting on my feet as I waited for them. Eventually I heard the sound of car pulling up.
"Hi Charity" Jeston said a bit awkwardly.
"Hi Jeston...is your mom here or did she leave already?"
"I'm here, but I'll be going off now. Thanks for staying by his side today Charity." Jenny said.
