Alone

I was once sad and lonely,

Having nobody to comfort me,

So I wore a mask that always smiled,

To hide my feelings behind a lie.

Before long, I had many friends;

With my mask, I was one of them.

But deep inside I still felt empty,

Like I was missing a part of me.

Nobody could hear my cries at night,

For I designed my mask to hide the lies.

Nobody could see the pain I was feeling,

For I designed my mask to be laughing.

Valerie's pov:

The hollow feeling in my chest was worse than the silver pain at my back. The effect of wolfs bane was strong but that didn't affect me. Warm hands wiped my tears. Josh was silently sitting beside me. He looked so sad as if he had rejected me. I mentally scoffed at that.

"Why am I here? Why wasn't I thrown out of the pack" I said. Josh sighed. "Can you get up?" he asked. I nodded, and he helped me get up and stand. We were in the pack hospital. Josh took me out to the window and what I saw surprised me.

I saw all the pack warriors lined up in front of the hospital, and female wolves behind them. I saw the teen wolves also standing nearby. "What are they doing here?" I asked Josh. He smiled and said, "Your mate has rejected you, not us. For us you are our Rejected Luna! We go where you go. We stay where you stay." He said it with so much determination.

"Did Gerald say nothing?" I asked shocked. "He tried to use his Alpha power on us but Luna Marie spoke up. She used her Luna authority and declared if anyone wanted to follow you they are free to do so. So, we all took the opportunity and here we are."

"Even if I am rejected and don't have a mindlink with you all? What about Marie! Gerald didn't kill her!!"

"About that." Josh scratched his head. "The pack wants you to claim the place as Alpha and we will swore our loyalty towards you and save Marie from all these torture".

"They What!! Josh! Can you even hear yourself! That's insane!"

"Why can't you do it Val? You have it in you, to be a leader. After what Xander has done to you, no one will ever wish to follow his commands."

"Josh, listen to me. As much as I would love to be with you people, being an Alpha is not my call. Especially when my Mate has rejected me. Who knows how long I can keep Ivory sane. I need to go back to Oracle. Please. I am not in a state of mind to consider this."

"I don't know what to say. Valerie, please can you ..." Josh turned his face away. He was crying. Maybe I was too. I hugged him.

"Josh look at me. This is my destiny ok. I was supposed to meet Xander and get rejected this way. It was not in your hands. It was as it was supposed to be. Now please help me pack my things. I need to get to Oracle's before dawn."
