I got back to the Thornton's house pretty late, but they didn't care that I was out in the middle of a hurricane lockdown.

"Make any new pogue friends?" Topper smirked as I walked up the stairs to my room.

"No," I scowled, "and that JJ guy was useless, couldn't give me anything."

"You're such an addict, just itching for your next fix aren't you," he scoffed.

"Don't act like you and your stuck up friends aren't doing lines of coke every night," I spat.

Fuck, I hate this boy and his stupid frosted tips.

"Whatever, night junkie," he whispered before retreating to his room and closing the door.

I  didn't sleep well that night, the sound of hurricane Aggie probably the main factor, but I also couldn't help but feel guilty at the fact I was staying here with the Thorntons, not having to worry about a freaking hurricane ruining anything because they're so rich, whilst a few miles down some people are hoping to god their property and livelihood doesn't get wrecked.

I woke up the next morning to the sound of Mrs Thornton, well I probably should be addressing her as Dr Thornton but who cares, yelling at one of her many gardeners.

I watched her nag and complain about her ruined petunias and the wreckage that had flown into the pool. Rich people problems.

I rolled my eyes and got dressed, spending any more time around these people would drive me insane.

I headed out without saying goodbye and started walking towards the Cut. A car or even a bike would be helpful but it's not in my nature to ask the Thorntons for any favours, they give me food, a roof over my head and some money to keep me busy and that's always how it's been.

As I walked through the Cut I watched as people tried to salvage their belongings, some even their houses. What a bubble the kooks lived in, and I hated being a part of it.

Eventually, I heard a commotion coming from one of the docks. I walked towards it, wondering what it was all about.

"Scooter!" A lady cried out as she ran towards a stretcher with a body on it.

When I got closer I realised the man was in fact dead.

Damn, not even one day on the Outer Banks without something crazy happening, now this should be interesting.

"Ever seen a dead body before, new girl?" A familiar voice asked.

I turned around to face none other than the annoying blonde boy from the beach yesterday, JJ.

"Have you?" I challenged.

"Now I have," he responded, making rather intense eye contact with me.
