Lydia has her things unpacked and put away to her satisfaction within the hour, standing back and surveying the room with her hands on her hips. Her suitcase has been tucked into the corner out of sight and her books neatly stacked on the desk. There are very little other personal things around: the duvet cover is a solid navy colour that is both stylish and functional and the space above her desk is devoid of pictures or keepsakes. She doesn't mind though, she's not the sentimental type.

It's barely noon, as Lydia had arrived slightly early to give herself time to get accustomed to her surroundings before the campus was overrun with confused freshmen and, if she was being honest with herself, the inevitable drama that accompanied the proceedings of a divorce. Her parents meant well, but if she has to go on one more tropical holiday just because they feel bad for putting her through said drama, her skin might actually peel off from sun exposure.

If it were up to her, she would skip orientation completely. She's done with trying to climb the social ladder. College is a completely different game to high school. No, the agenda for the next few years mostly consists of taking the most challenging courses she can, graduating as early as possible and going straight on to earn her PhD in theoretical mathematics before eventually winning the Fields Medal for her accomplishments. That's the plan.

Lydia likes the plan.

She takes in the limited desk space and huffs. She really would have preferred to be in a single, but then she had figured she could really use someone to help her survive on more than instant noodles and pop tarts. The cafeteria had promised to be disappointing so far, so sustenance was in her own hands. Lydia Martin had many talents, but cooking was not one of them. At this point, she was severely regretting her decision to check the little box next to double, and praying to god that this new roommate wouldn't be one of those sloppy, stay-out-all-night types that will just distract her from her studying.

What if she's bad at cooking?

Pinching herself lightly to distract herself from her mind's downward spiral, Lydia picks up one of the textbooks she had brought from home for supplementary reading. She's already placed out of most of the freshmen classes and finished reading most of the textbooks for her higher level courses. She's only a little bit disappointed that apparently nothing's changed since high school.

Halfway through chapter eleven, the door of the room swings open violently, hitting the wall behind it with a definite bang that makes Lydia wince. She can see chips of plaster on the floor from the now damaged wall and just like that, whatever little hope she had left for this living situation is gone.

A dark-haired head comes into view next, tugging an obviously overweight suitcase behind her with much difficulty as multiple duffel bags hang off of her arms. Lydia briefly considers getting up to help, but then the stranger succeeds in getting her stuff through, although the force causes her to fall backwards onto her butt on top of the pile of bags she's brought with her.

Lydia is momentarily speechless.

Then she snaps out of it and moves, throwing her book aside and stepping over the mess to try and reach the girl. 'Are you alright?'

The other girl sits up quickly, cheeks already tinting pink as she takes in Lydia. 'Oh my god, I had no idea you were already here, I'm so sorry about this mess,' she apologises urgently, pushing herself to her feet and taking a second to compose herself before throwing out a grin that makes Lydia feel as though she's been blinded. 'I'm Allison, nice to meet you. I'm not that weird, I promise. My dad was kind of nervous about sending me off alone, hence all the...stuff.' She gestures to the small mountain of bags that has consumed the floor of their dorm room.
