Viewpoint: Adda and Tyler. The Most Beautiful and Painful Goodbye

The kiss lingered, slow and painful, as he wound his fingers through her hair and she tightened her arms around his neck.

Everything seemed to freeze around them as they stayed locked together. Nothing else mattered, except for them. Not the rain drenching then, not the muddy ground underneath their feet, not even her bone-rattling shivering, which he still didn’t know if it was from the cold or drug withdrawal.

It felt like they were the only ones in the world. Everything and everybody had faded away as they entered their own world of sad, blissful passion. They disappeared within themselves and ignored whatever else that was around them.

Too soon, it ended, and they felt themselves slowly rising back into the real world.

            “I’m sorry,” she whispered.

He touched her cheek softly, knowing what she was apologizing for. “It’s okay. You’re better now.”

She cast her eyes downward. “But I’m not.”

            “You are—,”

“I can’t stay,” she said. “Danielle and my mom are making me go to rehab. Now...for a long time.”

“It’s okay. I’ll wait for you.”

He wasn’t getting the picture. He didn’t deserve to be with someone as fucked up as her. He deserved to be with somebody who could stay sober. He needed to be as far away from her as possible.

“Tyler,” she said, slowly and deliberately, “I don’t want you to wait for me.”

He gaped at her and she gripped his hand tightly. She hated hurting him, but he needed somebody stable. “But, Adda—,”

“I’m not the girl you fell in love with. And I refuse to put you through this.” She paused. “Waiting for me isn’t good for either of us, trust me. I’m leaving, and I don’t want or need you waiting for me.”

            “Adda, please—,”

She silenced him with a kiss. “Shhh. I have to go.” She squeezed his hand. “One more thing.” She stood on her toes and whispered softly in his ear. When she drew back, his eyes were wide and surprised. “I’m sorry.”

“I love you,” he said hoarsely. “Please, stay.”

She smiled sadly. “I know. That’s why I’m leaving.”

He watched her as she walked out to her Mustang and slipped into the passenger seat. Almost mechanically, he ran out to the car and lightly tapped on the window. She paused before opening it. Her dark eyes glistened with tears.

“I’ll still wait,” he said, pressing his forehead against hers.

            “Please don’t.”

He ran a hand through her hair. “I love you, Adda.”

            “I love you, Tyler.”

He kissed her one last time and then the Mustang sped away, taking away the only girl he would ever love.
