A Turtle's Death

By Zean Allen Lapuz

I fear the outside world
Strangling the very souls of the frontlines
Sipping through their veins
Feeding themselves---no exception
Is this redemption? an abomination
The loud streets became the animals' home
The dirtiest rivers cleansed within
Is this salvation? a threat to humanity's annihilation
We fear what killed thousands
We fear what we cannot see
This is destruction---starvation and bad governance

I fear every senses
For one touch, could make you numb
For one smell, could stop your breathing
For one presence, could destroy your life.

I fear the living
