Cora: Age 7
It was a hot summer day, when Cora's world was turned upside down. The hydrangeas were in full bloom in the park she often visited with her father. She'd always loved their strong floral yet sweet scent. Because her eyes didn't work, many of her other senses were heightened. Despite being physically blind, Cora had a gift, passed down from her father that allowed her to see the world.
Young Cora, at the tender age of four, woke from her slumber and stretched her arms above her head. Her fingers grazed over the plethora of plushies adorning her headboard and she smiled softly to herself as she opened her eyes. A scream escaped her as she saw the ocean before her, she was so high up and had no idea what she could possibly be standing on. She looked down at herself but her vision didn't change, she still saw the ocean before her as if she were about to plummet into it. Her hands felt around, wrapping in the bed sheets around her. Not able to comprehend what had happened, Cora began to cry.
"Cora? Sweetheart, what's wrong?" Her father's calming voice sounded from where her door should be, but all she could see were crashing waves. She cried harder not understanding what was happening.
"Daddy! Help!" Cora sobbed.
She felt his gentle warm hands cup her face tenderly. "Honey, look up."
Cora tilted her face upward yet her vision remained unchanged like it was now on a fixed point.
"Oh, my sweet baby girl, it's alright." His strong arms enveloped her pulling her into a warm protective embrace. "I'm sorry, I should have prepared you for this, I'd hoped it wouldn't happen so soon."
"What happened?" Cora choked on a sob.
"You got your quirk." He gently rubbed her back, "take a big deep breath, close your eyes and think about Mr. Bear." He placed a plush bear in her arms.
Cora sniffled and closed her eyes. Her vision darkened. She took a deep breath and thought of the plush bear she could feel against her. When she opened her eyes, she could see her room, but it wasn't the same, her view was from above giving her the ability to see the entire room. She saw her father holding her lovingly in his arms, saw herself crying against him hugging the plush bear.
She tilted her head up again and gasped as she saw her eyes, they were completely white, like her father's.
Since that horrifying day, when she'd become 'blind' her father worked with her to control her quirk. If she focused on herself, she could see herself, from an aerial view. It took some getting used to, there were many accidents as she learned to get a handle on it, lots of tripping as she learned to cope with the strange depth perception. After a few years, it became like second nature. When she wasn't focusing, her vision would run wild and she'd see all kinds of random things. If she focused on someone or something specific, she could see them no matter where they were.
Cora felt the warm summer air on her revealed legs. The wind ripped through her shoulder length teal hair causing it to fan out behind her as her father gave her a big push on the swing. A giggle escaped her as she flew forward. Another giggle escaped her as she whooshed back and her hair tickled her bare shoulders as it flew in front of her face. She tilted her head back as she giggled with glee and felt her heart warm at the bright happy smile upon her face. If she'd known what was going to come next, she'd have wished for time to stop in that blissful moment.
Her father suddenly tensed, a look of concern crossing his face. He reached out and caught the chain links of her swing causing her to come to an abrupt stop. "Daddy? What is it?" Cora asked softly as she noticed his hands were shaking.
"Daddy is going away for a while, baby." He bent forward and placed a kiss atop her head. At the edge of her vision, Cora saw police men wearing heavy gear creeping closer to them. The park had been cleared of all other people, when had that happened? "I need you to understand something, baby. You're going to hear a lot of awful things about me. Just know, everything I did, I did to make the world a better and safer place for you."
"Daddy...I don't understand." Cora felt tears welling in her eyes as the police drew closer their firearms aimed at her father.
"I'm sorry, baby, I fear my choices may have made life more difficult for you." He choked as he tenderly caressed her hair, "just know, I love you, more than anything."
"Daddy." Cora cried as the police all began shouting at once.
Her father reached into his pocket, "focus on Mr. Bear and don't look back, no matter what."
Cora did as she was told and her vision shifted to her bedroom to the plush bear sitting atop her pillow. The screaming voices all blended together her father took a step away from her and Cora let out a scream of horror as dozens of guns went off at once.
"Daddy?" Cora called aloud once a hush fell on the park.
He didn't answer her.
"Daddy?" She choked.
A gruff hand caught her by the arm and she was wrenched from the swing. "Come on." She didn't recognize the voice barking orders at her.
"No. Where's Daddy?!" Cora cried and tried to resist.
The rough hand around her arm tightened painfully. Cora tripped and let out a cry of pain as she lost her footing but her captor kept moving nearly dislocating her arm as she fell. There was no sympathy or comfort in the man's voice. He refused to answer her frantic sobbing questions. She was thrown in the back of a car. She reached forward and felt bars in front of her. It was a police car.
She thought about her father, and her vision shifted. A scream tore from her throat as she saw his lifeless body littered with bullet holes lying in a pool of blood next to the swing set. Shrieking sobs escaped her as she watched several police officers make rude gestures at his corpse and laugh as if they hadn't just gunned down the person she loved most in this world. Cora fell onto her side and curled into a ball sobbing uncontrollably. Her vision focused on her father, zooming in, ingraining the horrific image of his violent end into her mind until something inside of her shattered.
