To be entirely honest, I had no intention of going to my father's office, despite Seetha telling me to do so. I thought that maybe she would forget about it... I did not see what the urgency was. However, when the day was done and I helped her onto the carriage that would take her home, she looked at me with a stern expression that I felt I was going to have to get used to.
"Don't come home until you've done what I've told you to do."
I raised a brow.
I expected her to say something else, but she didn't. Instead, she put her hands in her lap and looked straight ahead as the coachman took her home.
For a moment, I stood there quietly, my hands knotted behind my back.
I could just lie, but somehow I knew that she would know.
So I let out a frustrated breath and took off my crown, handing it to one of the guards that stood by me. "Return this to the treasury," I said. I'd have no need for it until the next special event.
As I walked towards my father's office, I kept a frown on my face.
Since I had taken the throne, I had not stepped in there once. I felt that there was no need to... not yet, at least. Though it was his office, he never held anything of importance in there, and anything that was in there was often a mess in his drawers.
I figured I would have to clean it out eventually... just not... now.
When I reached the office, the two guards who stood at either end of the entrance looked at me with surprise. I could not blame them, no one came by this wing of the palace these days... it reminded them of a dead king and his murderous son. No one wanted to think of that.
"You have the key?" I asked.
"Yes, Maharajah," one of them said. He retrieved the key and bowed as he handed it to me.
I thanked him, unlocked the door and walked in.
After shutting the door, I took a deep breath. The room looked exactly how it looked when I was last in here. Of course, I was not surprised by that.
As I walked through the office, I noticed that a small layer of dust had accumulated on his things, though again, that was unsurprising. It had been some time since everything happened... of course there would be dust. So I walked around, noting the dust but not really knowing what I was looking for. Had my father waited here for me before everything happened? Did he wait here with something to say?
If that were the case, how would I ever know now? And how would I 'find some answers,' as Seetha had said.
I frowned.
So maybe this was a complete waste of time.
I considered going through his drawers, dealing with those documents that may have been in there. I didn't want to make this a total waste of time and maybe if I dealt with it now, I wouldn't have to come back later. Besides, if I went home too soon, Seetha may question me.
