I was shaking my leg impatiently as we sat and waited for Lord Sairan. I had been waiting for quite some time and I was beginning to get annoyed as I figured he was trying to send some sort of message. When he finally did come in, his two sons followed behind him, the eldest son looking rather proud of himself while they younger one looked worried.
Lakshmanan, who was here with me, spoke first as I leaned back in my seat and eyed the man and their guard in frustration. "Lord Sairan, you have quite the nerve to keep Prince Aaryaraavanan waiting for so long."
The Lord sat down across from me and I did not fail to notice that he did not bow or pay me any form of respect.
Lord Sairan was a tricky character. He was the most wealthy noble in the West and we found ourselves trying to appease him because his family had, for centuries, owned a vast amount of land which included major trade routes to our Western neighbours.
It was because of this man's neediness that I was sent to the Western Fort when I met Seetha. He felt like the crown was ignoring the west and was complaining, threatening to pull his support of the crown, and so my father sent Aarun and I there to make it seem like we did care.
I suppose maybe I should have thanked him. I may never have met Seetha if it weren't for his stupidity.
Of course, if he really did challenge the crown we could destroy him and his family. The only reason we never did was because his family was an old family and a large one. They had historically been supporters of the crown and my father did not want to have problems with a family who was tied to us for so long.
"I would apologize," the old man started, "but it seems you are here to question the decisions I have made about my land."
"You are not letting our men cross through your land," I said. "I'm sure you knew we would come with questions."
He let out a breath, looking at me somewhat lazily. "Well? What are your questions?"
I felt my eye twitch.
His timing was not good. I was still fuming about everything going on at home so now was not a good time for him to be testing my patience.
"The Maharajah has ordered for our men to cross through your land and provide support to our Western allies," Lakshmanan said. "What was left of the rebels after Prince Aaryan defeated them a year ago have recruited more men and are beginning to rise up again and we need to be prepared. Why are you not allowing our men to cross?"
"Because I do not want the Maharajahs men crossing through my lands."
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because it is my land and surely I can make that choice."
I narrowed my eyes. "The King of Chandraba is ordering it."
"Are you going to do something about this?" he asked. "I'm saying no. What are you going to do, my Prince?"
