A call to the janitor's office the next day got the light bulb damage taken care of. Luckily, they hadn't asked for my name which kept them from asking further questions after assessing the damage.

That evening a bummed out Iris returned to MAC. Her mother had been called in to work and Iris decided to come back to school early. With her in the dorms, Chase reluctantly agreed to let me stay in her room. Slowly, students started to trickle back to school, and there was heavier security after I was attacked. Not that the school knew why the lights had all been blown, they were under the impression it had been vandalized. Chase patrolled and checked in often. I noticed he seemed to be on more of a nocturnal schedule these days and wondered if that would change come Monday.

I spent Sunday alone in my room for the first time in what felt like ages. I sat at my desk working on a paper that was due, and I had dutifully procrastinated. As I searched through the drawers for my dictionary, a white envelope pushed out, falling on the floor. I scooped it off the floor, and my Gran's handwriting caught my attention. With all the craziness I completely forgot Mr. Dawson giving it to me. Wanting to preserve Gran's writing, I slowly opened the envelope careful not to tear it.

My dearest Morgan,

Well, Sweetie, if you're reading this, then I'm afraid I'm gone. Hopefully, you're old enough to understand why I've chosen to keep so many secrets. Before I explain anything I need to tell you how much I love you. Losing your parents devastated me. However, it also brought you to me. And I have enjoyed having you. I know your mother would be so proud of the beautiful young lady I'm sure you've become. It saddens me that you will now be alone, but I trust the Council enough to know they will help take care of you. I also know, if you're reading this letter, you have found your way to them. You can trust them honey. I have chosen to keep the secrets from you for your safety and that entailed staying away from the Council. I have kept you from the Gifted world in hopes that your grandfather would never find us.

I know this must be very confusing to you. You have always believed your grandfather to be deceased, and in a sense he is. The man I loved is long gone. He hasn't existed for many years. What remains; I'm afraid, is something darker, something unnatural. Unfortunately, that is all the information I have on him. He became obsessed with our Gifts and obsessed with the power. The further he delved into these obsessions the farther he pulled away from me and our family.

He eventually left because of our differences. However, he still showed an interest in you; curious about which Gift you had an affinity for. Once we realized the magnitude of power you were showing at such an early age your parents, and I decided it was in your best interest to live outside of the Council, outside of his reach. Unfortunately, shortly after this decision your parents had their accident. I hope you don't feel cheated by our decision. I know you must feel you have a lot to make up and learn.

We all loved you more than anything, and I hope one day you can understand how difficult this decision was for us to make. You're destined for great things child. I wish nothing but the best for you, and your happiness, please know you are loved immensely.

Love always,

Gran

My mind was spinning. My grandfather was alive? And what was Gran saying? Did he pull away from the Council altogether? I needed to see Chase. I couldn't wait any longer. I had to show him the letter. Maybe Uncle Spencer could help me find out more about my grandfather.

I barely remembered to grab my jacket and made a bee-line for the boys' dorm. I was stopped halfway by Nolan.

"You look like you're on a mission," he said.
