"When do you think she is going to wake up?"
"Palewing thinks that today is the last day before her condition stables."
"So... you mean that she might die?"
"Yes."

"I'm scared, Palewing!"
"Don't worry, she will be alright."
"Does 'dead' mean 'be alright'?"
"Be patient, Rosepaw."
"Rosepaw?" Scarletkit croaked. She opened one eye to see Rosekit towering over her, with some herbs in her mouth.
"Scarletkit?" Scarletkit blinked as Palewing hurried over. "Scarletkit!"
"Scarletkit! You aren't dead!" Rosekit shrieked, dropping the herbs.
"No! What happened?" Scarletkit tried to push herself to her paws, but failed miserably. Her right hindleg throbbed.
"You stupid, stupid kit!" Rosekit was practically giving Scarletkit a complete wash.
"Hey! You're still a kit too!" Scarletkit snapped back.
The relief was covered by grief and regret. "I'm so sorry, Scarletkit. I'm Rosepaw now. Wishingstar had the ceremony."
Scarletkit gaped at her sister.
"He also said that your leg might never-" Rosepaw gasped as Palewing's tail flew over her mouth.
"My leg what?" Scarletkit turned her head as she glanced at her right leg. What she saw left her mouth open.
Her fur was teared off and flesh peeked out from a coating of cobwebs. Some herbs were pressed into the wounds and it smelled like marigold.
"Oh..." Scarletkit closed her eyes. "So the Thunderpath monster got me."
"May I ask, Scarletkit, why did you suddenly decide to run away?" Palewing meowed gently.
Scarletkit sank down on her haunches. "I don't know. I felt bitter because Wishingstar ignored me and praised Rosepaw. And Sunflower wasn't exactly sympathetic either." She heard a gasp from Rosepaw.
"Oh, Scarletkit!" Her sister curled up beside her. "I'm so so sorry. Now you might never be a warrior."
Scarletkit purred sleepily. "Don't worry, Rosepaw..." she reopened her eyes and blinked at Rosepaw. Then she fell asleep.

It had been a quarter moon since the accident. Scarletkit was sitting near Rosepaw, who was munching some herbs for her Highstones journey. She was uncomfortably aware that this journey would mark the beginnning of a medicine cat's work. From that moment on, her sister would drift further and further away from her.
"Are you okay, Scarletkit?" Palewing asked.
"I-I'm not sure.. Palewing. Rosepaw will never be the same."
"That was exactly what Wishingstar said to me," the medicine cat mewed, her pale blue eyes understanding.
"And I'm not going to change, mouse-brain! I'll still be your sister, after all." Rosepaw swallowed her herbs.
"It's time, Rosepaw." Palewing murmured. She touched her nose to Scarletkit, and licked her on top of her head.
The two cats rose up and started padding towards the fern tunnel.
"Goodbye!"

Scarletkit was beginning to feel hungry when pawsteps sounded. Thinking that it was the medicine cat and her apprentice, Scarletkit pushed herself up. But it was Gingerpaw, carrying a big fat sparrow.
"This is for you, Scarletkit." He laid down the bird in front of her.
Scarletkit started into the deep green eyes. They were so beautiful, so colourful...
Without meaning it, she brushed her nose across the tom's face.
Gingerpaw jumped back.
Scarletkit also tried to jump but her leg ached.
Gingerpaw was the first to recover from the shock. "Uh, Scarletkit?"
Scarletkit felt her ears burn. She was horrified. "Oh. Great. StarClan."
Gingerpaw looked embarrassed. He flattened his ears.
Scarletkit felt a stab of rage. "You are so mouse-brained!" She hissed.
Gingerpaw did not look embarrassed anymore. Instead, he purred with amusement.
Scarletkit tried to cover up her uneasiness. "What is the matter with you?!? Get out of here!"
Gingerpaw purred even harder, and padded away, leaving Scarletkit alone with her rushing mind and a dead bird.

This chapter started off fine but then I binged a bunch of romance stories and well, now I can't get them out of my mind. Do you think that Scarletkit likes Gingerpaw?
