       Bam!

This is what Marie Anne heard from the kitchen. She rolled her eyes as she put down her knife on the counter and started walking angrily towards the stairs. Once arrived, her eyes softened as soon as she saw her daughter at the end of the staircase laying on the floor whimpering in pain. Her father pushed down the stairs. Marie went back to the kitchen completely ignoring her only child who is clearly suffering. She didn't want him to come at her.

On the other hand, Renee was starting to crawl away from the staircase to find a spot to hide. Even though this was a usual routine for her, she was still scared. She heard the familiar loud footsteps of her father coming down. Her face immediately turned into a terrified face.

" Oh so now you tryna get away?!" He slurred while shouting.

"I-" she whispered before getting cut off by a hard sensation to her right cheek.

...

She woke up from her sleep gasping for air. She was panting hard. Her chest going up and down trying to let the oxygen find its way to her lungs. She slightly shook in fear reminiscing the recent images. She just woke up from a nightmare. More like memory.

A terrible memory.

His father, Rayshaun was an alcoholic. It all started when he found out Renee's mother was cheating on him with one of her co-worker. He started to drink and drink until he was passed out halfway dead on their living room's couch.  He got more and more aggressive to the point where he would not only hurt her verbally but also physically. He wouldn't dare hurt his precious wife so Renee was his only option left.

Her mother, Marie was a cheater.  She was unaware that her husband knew about her affair. Hm, totally clueless. Even though it was so obvious that you could see it from a mile away. Visible hickeys on her neck, coming home at two in the morning limping and claiming that she had to work an extra shift and had leg cramps that happened almost every single day. Her father and her weren't no dummies. They knew. Renee always blamed her mother for what she's been through with her father. I mean she was the reason why she got a new bruise somewhere on her body every day.

Why didn't her parents divorce if the mother was cheating?

He was blinded by the love he had towards her she guessed. Always hoping that his soulmate would notice him and love him again.

How pathetic, she always thought.

Seeing her father run after her mother without any kind of dignity and self respect disgusted her to an extent.

She went through it for 5 years. 5 years. 60 months. 261 weeks. 1825 days.

Until her 18th birthday finally came. She graduated high school, got her diploma, got the chance to throw her graduation cap in the air like the rest of her classmates and thought that once she would be on her way to college, she would have a greater life away from her parents-

Pff. What a beautiful lie isn't it?

Turns out she got introduced to drugs. She lost her scholarship due to her very low grades, dropped out of college, lost all of her friends and soon became a stripper and prostitute in order to pay for her one bedroom apartment, her food and, of course, her drugs.

Amazing right?

Renee's smile started to fade as she realized that her euphoria disappeared. She became more and more aware of her surroundings. She despised that feeling. The horrific sound of the birds chirping, the needles of the clock ticking and the wind whistling through her ears.

She slowly got up from her bed making her way towards her stash when she suddenly heard a loud knock on the door.

The landlord.

She rolled her eyes and groaned as she made her way to her front door. She opened it and her light brown eyes met the dark irises of the owner of her apartment complex.

" You're late on your payment Carter" he said slightly raising his voice.

She hissed at the tone Roger used.

Roger was her obnoxious, self-centered and greedy landlord. The only things that mattered to him were what was in his pockets and what was in his pants.

A douchebag per se.

Trust her words when she says that she would kick his a*s if he wasn't the one allowing her to have a safe roof on top of her head.

'' Don't worry. I'll have your money by the end of the week.''

'' By the end of the week, 1,500 dollars better be in my hands otherwise you are OUT.''

With that, he left her doorsteps. His figure slowly faded as he went further down the hallway. Renee took the chance to flip him off before getting back into her apartment.

She slammed her door, put her back against the entrance and lazily went down until she reached the floor. Renee loudly sighed.

Time to go back work.
