Three

I got home to the house being empty. And by empty I mean no one was home. That was weird. I didn't recall anyone telling me I'll be alone in the afternoon today. But I wasn't going to complain. I quickly hung my coat in the closet and took off my shoes and went into the kitchen. I found a sticky note stuck to the fridge. It read:

We went to Dylan's parent-teacher conference.

We'll be back around seven. Also, Bobby and

Maura will come over for dinner tonight, including

the boys, so it would be great if you set everything

on the table. I made most of the food, so you can

just put everything on the table. All I need you to

                                          make is the pasta.

                                                                                Love, mom.

Great. Just great. This meant that Niall would be here, and I somehow knew he would be giving me the cold eye all evening. I guess I'll just have to try to ignore him. Also, weren't Maura and Bobby divorced? Why were they coming to dinner on the same night?

I looked at the time. It was a few minutes past five, so I had plenty of time to get ready. After washing my hands, I began to prepare the pasta. While it was cooking I began to set up the table with plates, eating utensils and whatever food my mother already prepared. By the time everything was ready— including the pasta— it was six fifty-three. They should be home anytime soon.

I went to my room and took out To Kill a Mockingbird. A book should get me relaxed. It usually always does. I've read this book too many times to count. I fell in love with it in middle school.

After working at Bobby's, I had to go to school, which was hard today. I had three exams this afternoon in a row. Then I had worked at the diner, but my boss told me I only had to work one hour because someone was coming in to train for the morning. I was totally fine with that, I was so exhausted.

I heard the door open and shut outside my room around seven ten. I walked out to see my family taking off their coats and hanging up the jackets of our visitors. There were Bobby and Maura, smiling and thanking my parents, and then there were Niall and Greg. Greg looked shy and stood away from everyone else on one side, and Niall was expressionless and stood away from everyone on the other.

"Hi," I said as I awkwardly stood outside my room.

"Hey, Robin," Bobby replied. "How was school?"

"Three exams. Other than that, fine, I guess."

"Robin, I haven't seen you for a while," Maura stated as she came over and hugged me. "I'm guessing work and your studies have gotten you tied up, huh?"

"You have no idea," I told her with a smile.

"Alright, everyone," my mom cut in, "let's all get to the table before the food gets cold." Everyone follows her to the dining area where everything is on the table. We all took our seat and began to eat when mom told everyone to dig in.
