It was almost six in the morning the next day, and I waited for Niall to drive up. I was in my AC/DC shirt, black ripped jeans, black leather jacket, and a black beanie. My hex bag was hidden in an inside jacket pocket.
The amulet I got from my grandma hung against my chest. It was of a silver dragon on a silver chain. My gram told me that the dragon is one of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiacs, and it represents power, prosperity, and vitality. It also tends to be a masculine, or "yang" type symbol. Since I was the first born, my gram decided to give it to me. It was initially my grandfathers. I'm pretty sure she would have given it to Dylan, but he wasn't born yet, and she was dying. This was two years before my mother got pregnant with him. Ever since, the dragon hung from the chain around my neck, and if I didn't have it in its place I felt naked.
I held the box that contained the book in my lap as I waited for Niall to arrive. Soon enough, I got a text from him saying that he was outside waiting for me. I took that as my queue to grab the box and the small bag I packed for the journey and headed out. I tried to walk out of the house as quietly as I possibly could, not to wake my mother or brother. My dad was already at work. Thankfully, everyone remained asleep. I put the box into the bag and continued my way outside.
I walked over to Niall who looked at me expectantly.
"Well?" Niall said. "Where's the book?"
I raised it out of the bag a bit, and as he reached for it I smacked his hand slightly. "I'm only giving it to you under one condition," I told him.
"Are you about to bargain with me?" he asked, raising one eyebrow slightly.
I ignored his question and said, "I'll give it to you, but only if you let me come with you."
"What? No way. Give me the book."
"Can I come with you?"
"Absolutely not," Niall retorted.
"Well, then I guess you won't get the book," I replied.
"Just give me the book and maybe I'll make it up to you one day."
"No. If I don't get to come with, you don't get to have the book. And if you won't let me come, I'll just simply get in my own car and drive to San Antonio myself."
Niall looked angry with me. He knew he clearly had no choice, and he hated it.
"Find," Niall growled. "If something happens to you, your parents are going to kill me, and then I'm going to kill you. Is that clear?"
"Crystal," I said with a satisfied smile.
Niall rolled his eyes and went to the driver's seat. I threw the bag in the back seats and climbed into the passenger seat. This was going to be fun.
"I hope you grabbed my dad's journal," Niall told me as we began to drive away from my building.
"I did," I said. "It's in the bag."
""Good, because you'll need it. Hos much have you read so far?"
"Forty-seven pages."
"In one night? Impressive."
"I actually read some while I was waiting for you. That's some great stuff."
"Yeah? Well, that stuff is real. All of it. And what will your parents do when they find out you're on a road trip headed towards Texas to give an angel a highly dangerous book while God knows what is out there?"
"They'll freak, that's for sure," I said.
"No, they won't just freak," Niall said. "They'll go insane, knowing that their untrained daughter is on the road with a hunter while demons chase her."
