Masonry.
Call it that, or whatever you want, I’ve got powers that no one around me understands. My hand is a gun, along with my friend’s hand, Zach, but we both agreed to never use our powers. It’s a little easier when you know that if you do, the government will hunt you down, and take you away to a place where you're locked up for god knows how long. But at the end of every month, Zach and I go up to the mountains and fire off all that we have. Zach said it's like blowing off steam. Can you blame him? He's got one of the most dangerous powers of them all, Ash.
We didn't even have a choice, either - we just happened to test positive for the Conduit Gene, or so the kit we ordered says. But I can’t tell Zach that I’m just so goddamn sick of hiding from the government. Hell, I’d fight back if you gave me the option to.
Zach always calls us and the people like us ‘Bio Terrorists”, the name the gov gave us.
But I’ll always call us conduits. Our REAL name.
================================
I’m observing my arm, shards of rock spiraling down it, when I hear footsteps coming my way. I quickly shattered the rock to nothing, and saw my mother at the door.
“If you finished your homework, you can play on your computer.”
I’m currently 17, Zach is a few months younger, so he’s 16. We know each other like we know our hand is a gun.“M’kay, love you mom,” I told her, forcing a smile. I do this with everyone I know - I fake emotions to get them off my back. I mean, I do love my mom, she’s like one of the only good things in my life, especially right now.
My mother walked over, ruffling my hair. “You need to get this trimmed a little…” My mother said, and left the room.
I looked down at my hand - could I tell my mom? Would she abandon me?
I guess I’ll never know.
===============================
Zach looked at me, dumbstruck. “You want to tell your MOM? And not Melinda? That's kinda saying something, you must trust her a lot, Jeff.” Zach told me, and I sighed.
"I dunno, man… i guess I'm just a little nervous about this. It's been two years, man. I've had these powers since…”
Walking to his jeep, I stopped, and Zach looked behind him at me.
“..JEFF!” He suddenly shouted.
I looked to my right, and saw a huge truck barreling towards me.
What do I do? Do I use my power to jump out of the way? Or do I make a barrier, potentially killing the driver?
I quickly weighed the options, and decided the best and worst option is to avoid the car. I fired stones out of my palm, the shards acting like thrusters, and I flew out of the way before the truck hit me.
The car stopped several feet from where it was. I may have brushed with death, but at least the driver is safe…
The driver, a large bald man, gets out of the truck, and began asking me if I was alright. When asked if he would tell anyone about my powers, he simply said that his daughter was a Conduit, and my secret was safe with him.
I guess I did the right thing. But what if I threw up a barrier..?

I lean over in my desk, this class feels like it’s been going on for hours now, I just want to vanish into a cloud of ash and get out of here.
