21:Jeffrey:True Hero

I clenched my hand around the badge. I can’t believe Zach just… slaughtered that boy’s father. I looked at the child, then at the body, them the cloud of smoke. I needed to do something, but what could I do?

I looked over to a D.U.P officer, and walked towards him. “Give me your radio.” My hands covered in stones, making gauntlets.

“Attention all D.U.P, we have a rogue conduit-” The officer began, but I yanked the radio out of his hand, gripping it tightly.

“All Dups, there is a mass murderer on the loose. His name is Zach Hart, and he just killed-”

The other officer came on the line, asking me, “Who is this? State your name and ranking.”

I paused. This is it - after this, I was sealing my own fate. But I had to do this.

“My name is Jeffrey Makowiecki, and I’m your new leading officer in Littleton, Colorado. I demand that you find this smoke bio-terrorist, and take him in, or I will do it myself.” I growled. I know this was wrong of me, but I…

I had to do it.

A week passed, and I got a call from an unknown number.

“Hello?” I asked when I answered.

“Hello, Jeffrey. My name is Brooke Augustine, and I wanted to speak with you in person.”

“Then why did you.. Call…” I looked up, and saw a woman in a trenchcoat, looking at me. She had wrinkles on her face, and short red hair, an earpiece on the side of her head. She looked at me, her brown eyes glistening at me. I blinked, and approached her, hanging up. She smiled warmly, but there was something in her eyes that sent a chill down my spine.

“So, you’re the Bio-Terrorist that got on my intercoms and demanded my troops..?” She asked.

I laughed nervously, and rubbed the back of my head. “Y-yeah… I’m sorry about the loss of Evan Davidson. It was my fault, I could have-”

She stopped me by holding her hand up. “You did everything you could do. If anything… I’m fairly impressed in your work. How would you like to work for me as an Elite?”

I jumped, and looked at her with wide eyes. Elite meant I would lead their army alongside Augustine. That would prevent my family and everyone I loved from the D.U.P, but that would mean I’d betray Zach…

Time froze around me, and I weighed my options.

If I joined the DUPs, then my family would be able to live a safe, happy life, including Melinda and other Conduits, but I’d have to sacrifice my friendship with Zach, destroying the bond that took years of my life to build. The memories flashed through my mind… But so did everything Zach’s ever done, up to killing Evan. But it’s all been to protect me…

But, if I deline, that would put my family and I at risk, and Melinda would be potentially taken by the D.U.P. But my bond with Zach would stay as strong as ever…

Time began to move again, and Augustine put out her hand for me to shake. “What do you say? Do you want to protect those around you, or yourself?”

I took her hand firmly, shaking it. “The people come first.”

She smiled. “Good answer.”

Another week passed, and I was ready.

I scaled buildings to distance myself from Zach as I followed him, my D.U.P jacket flowing in the wind. It was a yellow and black jacket, a black bird on the back, but I had spray painted blue wings over the bird, and I wore a white t-shirt to finish the ensemble. I floated down in front of him, making him jump.
