"Sophie, you're going to be late!"
Sophie brushed her hair furiously while shoving papers simultaneously into her backpack, fingers fumbling on her zipper. As you may recall, she had a new ride to school, which was by far a better alternative to taking the bus. It was a luxury that only the rich kids could afford; they brought their own sports cars that could put Sophie through college, all while shaming anyone with a Toyota. Sophie was incredibly elated that she wouldn't have to sit squished in between a boy that she could snap in half and a freshmen with a hair bow the size of your average stand mixer. So yes, it was really nice that her 'boyfriend' showed up every morning to take her to school in his brand new Mercedes.
Sophie scolded herself, knowing she couldn't get too attached to the luxury of riding in a car to school. She knew it wasn't supposed to last. After all, the future held teal eyes, not ice blue.
Sophie ran down the stairs like a force of nature, passing her adoptive mother flipping pancakes on the stove. One of them landed on the ceiling.
"Sophie, Breakfast!"
"No thanks, I don't want to keep Keefe waiting!"
Sophie rushed out the door, sandwich bag in her mouth and backpack struggling to be slung over her shoulder, as she shuffled into the passenger seat of Keefe's chair. She laid back, already out of breath.
"Hey," she said breathlessly, looking at Keefe and smiling.
"Hey," he said back, tucking a piece of stray hair behind her ear. He leaned in to whisper in her ear. "Don't look now, but Grady is watching us through the window."
Sophie swirled her head to see Grady peeking through the curtains of the window, glaring.
"I said don't look!"
Sophie faced Keefe and bopped his nose.
"Just drive. "
........................................................
Keefe Sencen's hand was in her back pocket, and Sophie felt on top of the world.
Heads swirled to face her. Whispers were passed, and all eyes were on Sophie Foster. Sophie had nightmares about this moment. People whispering about her, sharing glances and staring. It was one of those things where you would wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and have trouble falling back asleep. But the reality was much different. People were whispering about her, but it was good. They wanted to be her. Something about that filled her adrenaline, coursing clear and strong through her veins. It changed the way she walked and held her self, it filled her with confidence.
Keefe Sencen was her boyfriend.
And as she walked through the crowded hallway with Keefe's hand in her pocket, her eyes roamed across faces, skipping until her eyes landed on a pair of teal ones.
Her confident smile deteriorated immediately, and she intently stared back into those beautiful gems. Fitz had a look of speechlessness on his face, blank and without emotion. Sophie didn't know what to feel at that exact moment, all she could do was guiltily look away and focus her attention on her intertwined hands. Taking a deep breath, she tightened her grip on Keefe's hand and smiled at him with the warmth of a thousand suns.
She followed Keefe to his locker, plastering a smile on her face as she gripped her backpack tight. Keefe swung his locked open.
"What's wrong?"
