Inhaling and exhaling heavily I took grasp of my AK-47 assault rifle as I hid behind a brick wall striving for safety. The infected groaned as they slowly walked passed me following each other’s footsteps and looking straight ahead still and ravenous. I call them the infected because that seems to be exactly what they are, silent yet alerting, hungry and filthy. It all started about a year ago, one night a live news broadcast was produced on every television in the world telling us to stay in our homes, lock our doors, and collect weapons and plenty of food and water. I looked around the corner of the building to find no sign of any of the infected. I took a deep breath and fell back on the wall looking up into the blue sky. For a moment I thought I was back home with my mother and father and everything was peaceful and quiet again. I smiled then looked down at my rifle then suddenly a memory played in my mind about when this whole mess actually started.
I remember sitting down next to mother waiting for my father to return home from the King County Sherriff’s Department where he worked and usually came home at around seven o’clock. The time when he initially came home was seven-thirty where he plunged through the front door and frightened my mother and I. He threw a large gun at both my mother and me and was holding one himself. “They’re AK-47’s. Very powerful guns. Use them only when you need too.” He said rushed and almost yelling. I starred at him scared and shaking then ran to the window only to hear the sounds of large explosions and fires being started. “Where’s your sister? Where is Maggie!” Dad screamed running through the house in fear. “She’s at Nate’s house! What is going on?” My mother said. Her and I were scared and unaware of what exactly was happening at the moment. “We have to get out of here! I’m taking you both somewhere safe, we’ll pick Maggie up on the way.”
“Michael we’re staying here. We will wait for Maggie to get here, she’s not a child anymore she has her on license and vehicle.” My dad starred at her frightened with fear in his eyes. He looked at me then looked back at her then placed himself on the sofa. “Carly, we have to go. Please just trust me, I will talk to you about it on the way but for now we have to go immediately.” After my mother finally was ready to go after packing clothes, food, water, we walked over to the door prepared to leave. “Andy get in the car! Carly can you get the remaining ammo I left on the coffee table?” Dad ordered. Mum ran inside then returned about two minutes later, “I’ve got it! Here I come, now let’s go get Maggie!” She yelled running over towards the car. Suddenly between the times when we were sitting in front of television quiet and silent then when she ran out of the house with the extra ammunition it all changed and became dark and made the world a lot scarier and intense. One of the monstrous infected creeps grabbed her arm, and tore a piece of skin off. She screamed loud and tears fell from her eyes that were filled with pain and agony. My dad grabbed the ammunition then ran to the car. We reached the Maggie’s boyfriend’s house searched the rooms but found nothing. Literally. Photos, food, water; even some furniture was missing from what used to be within the home of loving family.
About two months later dad and I were constantly on the road and slept places high up where the infected could not reach us. He taught me how to use guns properly and safely, which I mastered after only a few weeks.
I breathed in and starred at a moving object in the distance. I ran onto the road hoping that the object would stop, it turned out to be a large truck, however, did not stop and continued driving leaving me to die. I paused then looked around for any more infected creatures lurking around my whereabouts. “Well, time to find a new home.” I said to myself, holding my beloved AK-47 steady and ready to use. I started humming as I had been walking a long a road for what felt like three hours, but I think it was on about thirty minutes. Time goes a lot slower in this crazy apocalypse; I just wish I could have had more time with my family. I think about Maggie, my mother and father everyday and when I dream I like to picture us back in our small farm like home surrounded by silence. The last time I saw Maggie we fought about something so idiotic and pointless that I literally could not even remember.
I felt my legs getting weak as my feet dragged along the road, I became tired and felt myself falling asleep as I haven’t gotten a reasonable hour of sleep in weeks, possibly even months. I fell to my knees and heard a groans of the infected I looked up, my eyes drowsy. All I heard from there was a loud car horn and the sounds of gun shots being fired along with a familiar voice, “Andy?” I heard before I blacked out.
