Elizabeth hadn't suggested to Jeremiah that he contact Sinner one more time; Jeremiah thought it was simply a good idea. He wasn't exactly sure why he thought it was, other than simply being routine follow-up from their interview earlier in the week. He didn't tell Elizabeth, either, as it was spur-of-the-moment rather than planned. Of course, if he found anything out, he would tell Elizabeth immediately. Jeremiah hoped that Sinner would still want to speak with him, as it seemed that the vampire lawyer was wary of him on several accounts. It was with great surprise that Sinner answered the call.
"What the hell are you calling me for, Jeremiah? Look, I'm out here on the fairway with Judge Alvarado, ready to play the ninth hole. I don't have time for this."
"Just a brief question, if I may."
"Brief. Brief is good. Fire away."
"How many others know that you were sired by Phillip?"
"That's an odd question."
"You asked for brief, there it is. Have you told anyone else?"
"Not that I can think of... oh, wait! At the party for the new council members, I think it was, I may have mentioned it to a couple guys."
"May have? Are you sure? Who were they?"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down there, chief. It was a bit crazy that night, and I may have had a few too many. We were doing blood boiler makers. A lot of blood boiler makers."
"What is a 'blood boiler maker'?"
"Don't you know? That's where you take a pint of blood, and you drop in a shot of bourbon. Then you slam the whole thing. And truth be told, by the end of the evening I think I was doing more bourbon than blood."
"Do you remember who talked with you about your sire?"
"Come to think of it, yeah. Yeah, I do. That gorgeous blonde with the long legs and killer body, what's her name, Phaedra, right? She asked me about it."
"Phaedra."
"Yeah, how could I forget her, right? I asked her who her sire was, but she sort of skirted around the answer. I didn't think it was my place to pursue the issue, so I let it drop."
"Anyone else?"
"Uh, yeah, come to think of it. That young guy, Adam, he asked me."
"And you told him, as well?"
"Sure! I didn't think he was around back in the day, as they say. Not that every vampire knows every other vampire, I mean, you know how it is. So, I didn't think it would hurt. And the funny thing is, it turns out his sire was Phillip, too! Small world, isn't it?"
"So, you told Adam your sire was Phillip, and he then told you, afterwards, that his sire was Phillip as well."
"Didn't I just say that? Anyway, talk about coincidental! So, I guess the kid and I are brothers, of a kind. Is that crazy, or what?"
"And you told him your reasoning as to why you decided to keep it a secret?"
"Sure, I mean, why not? It's not like it's a big deal these days. May as well be honest about it, right?"
"But you did not tell him about the rumors."
"No, I guess I didn't. Jeremiah, where are you headed with this?"
