Before carefully trying if the door was locked, I tied up my curls in my neck to prevent it from blocking my sight. The heavy door was open, which was a strange thing on its own.

I crept inside and closed it gently behind me, taking in the poorly lit corridor. The concrete covering everything was dirty and rags hung from the ceiling, showing that at least no cleaner had been here in at least a month.

There was just one door on the left and stairs on the right, and as I found the door locked, I went down, attentive not to make any sounds. My sneakers thudded softly on the concrete as I reached another, very long hallway with many doors.

What was this place? Residences for personnel? Storage?

Due to the bad lighting my view couldn't reach far into the corridor, but I saw a shadow moving in one of the rooms. My heart beat heavily against my chest. I was about to call out to them, when I heard the door on the floor above me open and close with a notable slam.

I whirled around when the lights suddenly died. Frozen in place as my breath hitched in my throat, I heard a person softly nearing the stairs. I started trying every door in rising panic, but none opened.

Why did I think this was a good idea, again? What if this was exactly what the people who trashed my apartment wanted, to trap me? My heart was now beating out of my chest as I was not even caring anymore for how much sound I was making trying to open doors.

The person was already at the end of the stairs when I finally found an open door and fell in.

The moment I stood there, in the dark, I realized I wasn't the only one present in the room. My heart dropped to the ground, completely frozen, as I broke out in cold sweat.

Was it the owner of the prying eyes I felt? The person I saw sneaking into a room? Maybe it really was one of them who left my apartment in such a state?

Something rustled in the corner and I stepped out of the doorway, to the wall to brush over it, trying to find some kind of switch for the lights. My knees were reeling as I hugged myself, not having found any.

I heard the other person in the room slowly get up and my breath got more and more shaky, making my hand clasp over my mouth to make less sounds.

Don't see me, don't see me, I prayed, as I heard the person in the hallway also making their way to where they heard a door open.

Suddenly, the other one in the room jolted forward, running for the door. I felt their presence nearing me and my leg shot out in reflex, tackling them. I yelped as the person actually fell down and heard the clicking of a gun from the person in the hallway, making me flinch.

"Samantha?" I heard a familiar voce speak, as the lights switched back on.

I turned my head to find Samuel there, in full suit, with a loaded gun pointed at the man on the floor and his hand on the switch next to the door. A feeling of relief washed over me as I suppressed a whimper. I stumbled out of the room, almost tripping over the man who was cursing rigorously, reaching for his knee.

Samuel spread his other arm to catch me and gripped me firmly at my waist.

"What the hell are you doing down here?" he muttered, shaking his head.

After having made sure I stood stable, he let me go to roll over the guy who was gripping his leg. I tried to focus my eyes on the guy I tripped. His skin was toned, and his dark eyes were filled with anger, not a face I'd seen before. He must've fallen hard on the concrete, his palms and knee were shaved and started bleeding.
