"Are you going to stay or head home?" Matthias asked, leaning on my shoulder, exhausted, as we stared at the leaving Davidson.
"Head home."
"As if there was any doubt." He massaged my bones before letting me go.
We were just two seconds in the Bureau again, and our Assistant Director already waited for us to report everything. Lucky for us, the man was easily satisfied with a simple summary.
Just as we were about to turn around and head to bed, Lloyd appeared from the corner. His black suit showed he didn't even sleep after going home yesterday evening. Well, I didn't either, though my shirt had gotten a thorough wash by the downpour a few hours ago.
"Thomson, Laghari!" He skipped towards us. "Good to see you. Everything wrapped up there?"
"Yeah. But boy, that was a trip," Matthias spoke, hitting the man on his shoulder. "You're going home?"
"Definitely. Do you guys know where the girl, uh, Samantha is? Is she still here?"
"Haven't seen her," I responded, fiddling with the keys in my pocket as the man before me jumped from one foot to another.
"Ah shit, well, her parents are here. They flew all the way from... England. It'd be great if I didn't have to send them back to their hotel."
Samantha's parents, huh. It was fucking five in the morning. But I guess any normal parent would give up their night's rest for their child, I thought, leaving my keys alone.
While Matthias brought up that Saunders was probably with the girl he took out his phone to call her. She didn't pick up.
He and Lloyd took their losses and gave up, greeting each other goodbye for the night. Matthias and I parted for I had to pick up my jacket and bag and as I walked back, mind completely numb from the exhaustion, I feared I might seriously drop to the floor and sleep there.
How the hell am I going to be able to drive?
My index finger traced the lining on the wall of the endless hallway, until it stopped abruptly, making my head finally lift up.
It took a while for my eyes to adjust but as soon as the large front doors were in focus, a stunning girl with the cutest face and the most beautiful curls came into sight. Saunders was leaning against the doors and explained something to my girl, her fingers gesturing cryptically.
She noticed me and lifted her eyebrows as I neared. Before I knew it, my hand was on Sam's shoulder, making her turn around to me and her eyes widen.
"Eh-"
"Your parents are here," I put forth, and just as I finished my declaration, a yelp sounded from behind.
"Sam! Oh my God, Sam."
I stepped aside, startled, for a brown-haired woman to pull Samantha in a tight embrace. The girl let out a few coughs and laughs.
"Mama." She hugged her mother back as I forcibly pulled my eyes away from the emotional scene to watch a grey, sympathetic-looking man skip towards his daughter, followed by his tired teenage son.
Saunders let out a well-meant laugh and as I met her eyes, for once, she didn't look away. She must be too tired, like me.
"Mama, you're strangling me," Samantha brought out, suppressing a big smile.
Her older replica let her go, sniffing, to make place for her husband to take Sam in his arms. I felt very strange, an experience that was only magnified when Sam's mother turned to me, with tears waggling out of her big dark blue eyes.
