Chapter 4: The Death of Me
-Damian-
Man, I’m such a jerk.
I sat on my bed back home. School has ended and I finished my homework, we barely got any today so I was happy for that. Who wouldn’t be?
I had my head in my hands, trying to think straight but my mind kept travelling back to Lyra’s outburst a couple of days ago. I don’t know what is it about me but I just can’t stop replaying that scene in my head…
“Not helping?!”
I stopped my conversation with Ryan and turned my head to who had shouted. When my eyes found her, all I saw was a very, very ticked off Lyra. Her eyes were locked on Lillian, her teeth gritted with anger and hurt. Why was she like this? What happened?
Everyone turned silent as well, all eyes were on the fight that was about the start between Lyra and Lillian.
“You’re the one that is denying everything we suggest,” She continued, her gaze not once leaving Lillian, “you’re the one that is giving us difficulty and you’re saying I’m not helping?!”
She’s lost it, I know she did. I already knew that Lillian and Lyra are both rivals with each other back in grade 7. They fought for the better grades and I swear Lyra has to deal with Lilly’s insults almost twice a week. The nasty looks she gives her, the whispering and laughter… it was just all too much for me.
“Pfft, how am I causing any difficulty?” Lillian denied it so casually I almost believed her for one second. But no way am I falling for that, Lyra was pissed and that said everything.
“You’re the one with glasses, shouldn’t you be suggesting better dance moves than that, idiot?”
At the last word, anger rose in my chest. That insult really hit Lyra hard, I can tell. Her eyes were blazing with so much anger and hatred and I swear she’s going to go on a killing spree if someone doesn’t stop her soon. I clenched my hands into fists, my mind wavering whether I should say something or not.
But if I did, everyone would think I liked her or something. Which is not true… okay maybe a little. She just looks so adorable when she’s angry but the hurt in her eyes did not suit her well.
I caught Lillian’s smirk. Oh how I loved to punch her in the stomach right now. Doesn’t she see she’s driving Lyra off a cliff?!
Suddenly I realized it’s been 10 silent seconds already and Lyra still stood glaring at Lillian. I thought she was going to kill Lillian right now but there she stood, not moving an inch close to that devil. It took me another second to notice she was trying to pull it together, how her shoulders were shaking from the effort of restraining herself so she doesn’t end up beating the shit out of Lillian.
Slowly, she began to move her gaze around the gym to everyone watching. They were all watching, a few muttering to their friends. Then her eyes turned towards me and my friends. Her eyes stayed on me.
I didn’t get it, why was she looking at me? I just stared blankly back her, trying to act cool. We made eye contact for a moment and I felt shivers down my spine. She was looking at me, but why?
That’s when she turned back to Lillian and said something to her in a voice so quiet I didn’t hear her clearly. But I got the main idea, she was telling Lillian to back off. Lillian just rolled her eyes at her but Lyra was already heading towards the door. She held it together well but I knew Lillian’s words still stuck in her mind. I took a step towards her but stopped myself. What was I doing? Well trying to comfort Lyra, you idiot!
