"Grandma, if you don't wake up soon I'll never get to school! Its already 6 am!" Roseabella yells while running down the hall to wake up her little brother.
"Alex its time to get up, you have to be at school early today. I just started my new job and I can not be late. I want to make a good impression, even if I am just a cashier." she sighed.
Roseabella and her brother have been living with their adoptive grandmother ever since their birth mother abandoned them to be with some dude she was dating at the time. When their mother left her brother had just been born and she was 10. Its been exactly 8 years since then.
"Oh Roseabella I feel as though you shouldn't be working on your 18th birthday. Its not everyday that a girl turns 18, this day should be special." Justina says coming down the staires
"Really its fine grandma. I just want to do what I can to help around the house, plus this isn't really a day that I wish to celebrate. To many bad memories." Roseabella says with a slight shudder.
"Will you at least be home before midnight, I dont want anything to happen to you. There are dangers lurking around every corner." Justina says as she puts a tea kettle on the stove.
"Grandma, our house is in the middle of the woods, and im pretty sure nobody lives here but us. Why do we live here again?" Roseabella says while shoving a banna and nutella sandwitch into her mouth. The look in her eyes shows that she wants an answer but knows she isnt going to get one.
Grandma Justina looks away for a moments then says. " There is something I need to tell you. It is really important." she looks away again while her eyebrows furrow as she thinks."What time do you get off of work?
Not noticing her grandmothers tone of voice Roseabella shruggs." I get off at 7. Why cant you just tell me whatever you need to before I leave or just send a text."
Before the grandmother could respond Alex comes rolling down the stairs, tooth brush in his mouth, pants barley on and his shirt over his head covering his eyes.
The loud crash makes both Justina and Roseabella jump, and snap thier heads in the direction of the sound. Instantly Roseabella bursts into laughter. Alex just stands there struggling to pull the shirt down. Justina walks towards Alex and assists him. You would think an 8 year old boy would know how to put on clothes. Guess not.
" Come on pipsquek, im gonna be late." Roseabella walks over to him with his book bag and a strawberry nutella sandwichand messes with his hair a little.
"Love you grandma!" they both yell while running out of the house.
ROSEABELLAS POV
I arrived 20 minutes late because Alex decided to forget the most important thing he could ever need at the house. Well it may have not been a decision, but it still made me late all because of a stupid dog chain.
To Alex the dog chain meant the world, it was the only thing we had left of our father. But to me on this very specific day that do chain meant me being late for my job, the job I just do needed to keep the very same Alex in school.
So I walked into the mangers office 25 minutes later than what I deemed acceptable. Got a slap on the wrist and a lecture.
Walking out of the office I couldn't help but mutter over and over about that stupid dog chain.
After all I did believe that first impressions were the only ones that mattered. To an extent of course.
