"And that's it, the place is yours Mr. (l/n). Good luck with your business ventures!" the seller said, handing over a silver key. Picking up the key, (y/n) smiled, finally, all of his saving paid off. He finally had a place of his own, walking back to his car. He drove off to see his newly required store.
Ever since he was a child, (y/n) used every chance he got to earn money in order to open up his own bakery. Having watched his grandmother bake tons of delicious things as a child, (y/n) missed his grandmother, after he and his mother moved back to the city. Since then, he always wanted to open up his own store, so that, even in spirit, his grandmother and him can make things together once more.
However, it didn't turn out that way. When (y/n) got to his store, he found no renovations have been done, despite having called a company to renovate the store while he was finishing out the final paperwork. He already obtained the permit to do so, and the company he had hired fetched for a hefty sum. But despite his best intentions and background checks of the company, he found out that they had gone bankrupt days after he hired them. Essentially meaning that whoever was posing as the company, had conned him out of his hard-earned money. Especially since no one from the company even sent a word to him.
(y/n) let out a sigh, there was nothing he could do now. The money was gone, but at least he had gotten the store he's been eyeing for quite some time. But without any furniture or really anything to make the store useful for business, it was simply, a blank slate. There was a kitchen, and some rooms left by the previous owner, but besides that, the place was left untouched. With only enough money left to pay rent for that month, (y/n) didn't want to lose this place he worked so hard to acquire, only to be unable to pay for it in the end.
Your pov
Heh, this is just great, I barely have any money left and I was hoping that if things didn't turn out this way. I could've quit my dead-end job and be able to live a life without having to hear that verbally abusive manager, who just loves to give me more work to do with little pay. Let's... close up shop for today.
Walking back into my tiny apartment, I was greeted by Eclair's squeaking. Chuckling to myself, I opened his cage, taking him out. "I'm happy to see you too, Eclair," I said, petting him. He snuggled into my thumb, but then started squeaking more. Ah. I placed him on top of my head, where he moved around a bit, before falling asleep. Heh, as carefree as ever, I see.
Slipping off my shoes and jacket, I went into the kitchen to see what I could make on hand. Just as I was about to grab for the instant noodles, my grandmother's recipe book caught my eye. It was the only thing entrusted to me when she died. It was a simple-looking book, with a burgundy cover, filled with tabs and yet, when I was younger, it was if my grandmother was casting magic spells from the book.
Everything she made was filled with love, it was so much fun helping her bake things. They were all so delicious and fun to do. Ah, I miss those days, but I'm glad at least that my grandmother can rest peacefully.
"Hmm, Eclair what do you think? Should I look through my grandmother's recipe book?" I asked him, which he let out a tired squeak. Alright, alright, I guess I'll go look through it. It's been a while since I last made something from this book, plus reading my grandmother's handwritten notes in the margins, is always something fun to do.
Opening the book to a random page, I landed on my grandmother's white bread recipe. In the margins it said: Whenever you feel down, make this recipe. It's simple and easy to do, and when you put your heart into it, something magical will occur.
Heh, even in spirit, my grandmother knows how to cheer me up. Alright, let's make bake some bread! Looking at the ingredients, I luckily had everything I needed, washing my hands and prepping the small work area I had available. I began to follow my grandmother's recipe.
"Add the flour... knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth, slightly tacky, and bounces right back when poked." I read off of the pages of the book, making sure that I had placed it in a glass box so that it wouldn't get damaged. For my 11th birthday, my mother brought me a stand mixer, which in the case of making bread is so helpful, because kneading it by hand was so hard! I hope my mother is doing well, although I do visit her from time to time, she does live alone, in another city.
I shouldn't worry about those things right now, let's focus on breadmaking and going back down memory lane. Making a cup of instant noodles, while I waited for the bread to proof, I went through my email while Eclair continued to sleep on top of my head.
When the hour timer went off, I divided the dough into two pieces, shaping them into balls, before letting them rest for 10 more minutes. When 10 minutes, well actually, 20 minutes passed, I sprayed my loaf tins, and also shaped the two dough balls into a loaf. Placing them into the tins, having preheated the ovens beforehand. I waited for another 30 to 40 minutes, or until the loaves were a crispy golden brown.
The aroma woke up the gluttonous Eclair, who scurried off my head to find the source of the smell. However, due to the sort of high sugar amount that's poisonous to hamsters, I couldn't feed Eclair it. He squeaked, trying to bite my fingers out of annoyance. "Sorry, next time I'll make you something different," I said, trying to pet him. But he kept dodging but after a while, he gave in, although he did continued to ignore me.
By now the bread was cool enough to take out the pans. Slicing one of the loaves, I bit into the soft, chewy, warm bread enjoying every bite of it. It was so soft and yummy! I could eat this forever!
