CHAPTER ONE: THE MEETING

Everyone in this town knows me. Not because I'm popular or important to this community, but because my dad is the mayor of this crappy town called Summits. My life isn't as fine and dandy as people make it seem.

My mother, Marie, is a depressed lawyer who has no idea how to raise a family. Our family consists of yelling and an overabundance of lonely days. My dad, Nicholas, is trying so hard to become a great dad but between work and everything, he just can't find it in him. To top them two off, Jace (my brother) is your stereotypical player. Good-looking, with his wavy brown hair, deep blue eyes and sharp features, its easy to see how people like him. Except when the girls come around. Yeesh. I just have to shudder at the thought of them.

"Hey Lidya?" Jace greets.

"I haven't even dropped my bags yet! What do you need?!" I shout back. This child need to learn his timing.

"What's for dinner?"

I can practically hear the smirk on his face. I don't even have to look up to know its there.

"Make it yourself you dimwit!" I roll my eyes so far back that it seems I'm trying to find a brain.

"No thanks. This beautiful face of mine can't handle the heat and effort it takes."

This child! "I can feel the narcissism radiating off of you. That's not good!" I bite back.

At this point I am all but running up the stairs and into my room. Smoky,my dog, slowly lifts his head to look at me.

"Hey bud!" I great while sinking into my white comforter.

A loud crash sounds, followed by barking.

That dang dog knocked something over again, didn't he?

I lean over to turn on my lamp light when I notice that something's off. Smoky's on the bed still...

Even though the thing that fell was a pencil, I couldn't help but feel that something was... different.

My window! I could have sworn I closed it before I fell asleep. Apparently not! The window was wide open with the cool autumn air filtering in. As I get up to shut the window, I see a creamy gold feather, about the length of a hairbrush. I know that was NOT there before. How di-

I hear a breath hitch behind me. Paralyzed in fear, I begin to turn around. When I realize I'm not alone, a large hand covers my mouth silencing my scream.
