- PREVIOUSLY -
"Who is your crush?" The room fell silent. Tam paused for a minute before answering, considering his next words.
"...Biana..." he admitted. The group went crazy. All eyes turned to Biana. She had confessed that she liked Keefe earlier, but all the girls knew she didn't.
"Tam...I..."
- IN THE PRESENT -
"Tam...I...like you too! I always have. Keefe, I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to lead you on. But when you told me you liked me, I felt bad telling you that I didn't feel the same way. I hope you can forgive me," Biana replied.
Tam and Keefe looked at each other, then burst into laughter. The girls sat in confusion, and so did the other two boys. Tam and Keefe getting along was practically unheard of. But laughing together? What in the world was going on?
"What are you guys laughing about?" Biana asked, clearly shocked at their reaction to her response to Tam.
"Biana, I do like you. A lot. But Keefe never did. It was a prank, and a good one at that!" Tam and Keefe high-fived.
"W-what?" she stuttered. Biana's face was bright red from embarrassment.
Everyone else proceeded to join in on the laughter, even Biana. After they were all tuckered out, the group climbed into their bunk beds to go to sleep. Around an hour later, everyone was out cold. Except for Sophie. She lay on her surprisingly comfortable bed pondering whether or not they made the right decision by agreeing to become a part of the Echoes. I mean, they didn't have any way of knowing if the group was lying, if this was all a trick.
"What are we doing? This whole thing is insane," Sophie whispered to herself. At least, she thought it was just to herself, until Dex's voice broke the silence that blanketed the room.
"I don't know, Sophie. We could have just fallen into a death trap and been completely oblivious to it. But this could also turn out to be just what we need to get a step ahead of the Neverseen and finally put an end to this war."
"Dex? You're still awake?"
"Yep."
"Guess I'm not the only one wondering if we made the right choice. Do you think we did?" Sophie asked.
"I think so. But we won't know for sure until this whole thing is over. I do have a few suspicions about the 'Echoes,' but again, I don't know if they're even true."
"Yeah. But you're right, we'll get out of this. And we'll do it together," Sophie replied.
"Absolutely. There's no better way," Fitz chimed in.
Huh. I guess this has been on everyone's minds, Sophie thought to herself. Because soon after, the whole room was alive with conversation, whether it was about an escape plan if the whole thing turned out to be a trap, or about how to get communication with the Black Swan and their parents.
"So Dex, do you think you can rig the Imparters so that we can communicate with our parents?" Keefe asked.
"I think so. I just need something rubber to put over my hands so that I don't get shocked. Anything around here that might be of use?" he asked. Everyone got up and looked around the room for something rubber.
"Hey! I think I found something!" Linh called out. She was over by some of the crystals on one of the walls. A small ball of water was floating in the air next to her, and the crystal she seemed to be focusing on looked different from the others.
"Woah. What is this stuff?" Tam asked as he ran his fingers along the crystal. A substance stuck to his hand. It looked almost like tar. But when he tried to transfer it to his other hand, it broke apart into grains as small as sand.
"This might work. I'm gonna try to collect as much of it as possible," Dex said.
"Alright, we're finally onto something here," Sophie announced.
- IN THE ECHOES HEADQUARTERS -
"Boss, come look at this," a voice said.
"Hmm. So they're onto something. We need a distraction. Some fake event to keep them away from the crystals. They can't fix the Imparters, or we're doomed. Sophie and her friends can't find out that we work for the Neverseen. If they do, we're going to be eliminated," an deep distorted voice answered.
The Echoes were a branch of the Neverseen. And Sophie and her friends had fallen right into their trap.
TO BE CONTINUED...
A/N: BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! I am excited to tell you guys that I will be making a SEPARATE fanfiction about the Echoes! It will be similar to this story, but mainly focused on the Echoes, not a lot of romance. I can't wait to start writing it! But anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter! Stay safe, especially with all that's going on right now <3
