Major Depressive Disorder

Causes

Thought that the disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain that does not allow for the neurotransmitter that regulates emotion to work correctly.

Signs/symptoms

-the general feeling of sadness
-no desire to do/participate in anything enjoyable
-noticeable weight loss/gain
-appetite changes
-feeling tired
-no motivation to get out of bed
-inability to get sleep
-feeling of worthlessness
-low self-esteem
-consider suicide

Anxiety Disorder

Definition

Anxiety Disorder is the consistent feeling of worry or apprehensiveness occurring on most days of the week.

Symptoms- Mental and Physical

-restless or on edge
-feeling tired often
-lack of concentration or blank mind
-easily irritated
-the tightness of muscles from stress
-difficulties falling/staying asleep
-loss of appetite
-gastrointestinal upset
-racing heartbeat
-increased blood pressure
-headaches
-severe fatigue

Borderline Personality Disorder

Causes(this is long)

The cause of the disorder is hypothesized to be the same as for other personality disorders. Environmental factors may be a strong influence on the development of the disorder increase with parents with a personality disorder diagnosis. Instability, abuse, or neglect in the home increase the incidence of mental illness including this disorder. There is also the possibility that there is a dysfunction of the brain chemistry that may cause neurochemical instability contributing to Borderline Personality disorder. Although the diagnosis may be evident in children and adolescents.

-constant emotional and relational chaos

-sexual behavior
-drug use
-gambling
-illegal behavior
-self-harm

Panic Attack

Overview

A panic attack can be so severe that it feels like a heart attack and often will lead to a trip to the emergency room of the local hospital.

Cause

It isn't a clear cause but it often occurs in those that are under a lot of stress, have been a victim of trauma, or have a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Symptoms

-chest tightness
-rapid heartbeat
-increase blood pressure
-hyperventilation
-trembling
-tunnel vision
-sweating
-becoming off balance

Anorexia Nervosa

Cause

Anorexia is a disorder that is often in the spotlight due to the strong influence of the media to have a perfect body.

Signs/symptoms

-weight loss
-excessive exercise
-checking in the mirror compulsively
-repeated comments regarding weight
-fatigue
-easy bruising
-fainting
-overuse of laxative, diuretic, and/or diet pills
