"Hi there, cutie," She cooed scooping her younger sister in her arms. The little girl threw her arms around her neck and squeezed her into a tight hug. "How are you?"
"I missed you," Lamia puckered her lips and pressed a sloppy kiss to her cheeks.
"I missed you, too," Lamia giggled as Lamaisa smothered her with kisses.
The woman who had accompanied her younger sister smiled as their eyes met, "I'll give you both some time to catch up. Holler if you need me, I won't be too far."
Lamaisa nodded, gratefully and placed her sister on the ground.
"Let's take some swings. Push me?" Lamia asked as she looked at her, her eyes bright with hope.
Lamaisa groaned. With a tiny tug on her heart and hand all the same she relented, allowing her sister to drag her towards the swing.
Tired with all the pushing, running, chasing and lots of rolling in the grass, they sat on the bench with Lamia sprawled on Lamaisa's lap. Lamia licked her cotton candy and regaled her with tales, animatedly. Lamaisa grinned, she listened closely even when she felt her attention falter at times as she imagined her late mother would have and held her sister tighter to her chest.
"It's time for us to go," The woman interrupted Lamia's idle ramblings. Lamaisa's heart sank in her chest as her eyes darted to the darkening sky, she hadn't even realized it was time for her sister to leave.
"I'll see you in two weeks," Lamaisa spoke and turned her sister around in her lap so faced her. Lamaisa kissed Lamia's forehead then her cheeks, one by one, Lamia imitated her, reciprocating her gesture in earnest. Her throat stretched painfully when she rose from the bench with Lamia perched on her waist.
Mrs Arham, Lamia's adoptive mother took her from Lamaisa, she didn't resist.
"I love you," Lamaisa yelled. She couldn't bring herself to follow them to the car so she waited under the tree, watching her from afar.
"I love you, too." Lamia shouted back, waving at her over her mother's shoulder. Lamaisa pulled her trembling lips inside her mouth and turned to leave before they left her, alone.
She saw him, then with her phone in his hand. He looked around and moved to pick her bag to steal it, undoubtedly so she ran.
"Hey!"
Taking advantage of his momentary distraction, she snatched the phone from his hand and grabbed her bag from the bench.
Then, she ran for her life. That's all she ever seemed to do.
"Hey! Stop!" He called.
She looked behind with her heart pounding beneath her chest to see if it was her last day. Lamaisa sighed with relief when she didn't see a gun pointing at her. She could easily outrun him, with a lopsided smile, she gazed ahead determined to do exactly that. Dodging the cars and humans alike in her path.
She paused, out of breath at the intersection. The boy was running towards her. She could tell the front of his shirt was soaked, a stark blue. His blue shoes caught her attention. A Football player? Not a thief? A creep?
