"So this person I am taking you to meet, who are they?" I sipped on the warm water that Oscar so graciously provided, quenching my throat before I responded. We'd been heading towards Moscow from the moment I had woken up.
"She's a person who can get me out of the country undetected." The clothes Oscar gave him were very oversized but comfortable enough. Although, I would have been thankful for anything considering everything I was previously wearing was soaked.
"How would they do that?" He pestered. I had only just met the man, but I could tell he loved knowing. He wanted to know everything and it was certain he'd never make it as a secret agent.
I rolled my eyes at him and scoffed. "She's going to put me on her back and fly me."
"Very funny." He said in a tone that implied otherwise.
I laughed to myself, letting a small smile warm my face. "I thought so."
He briefly took his eyes off the road to look at me as I laughed. Instantly, a small smile appeared. "You should laugh more often, it's nice."
His compliment took me by surprise, and I could feel my cheeks heating up. "She has access to her own plane."
Oscar raised his eyebrows in surprise. "And how did she get a hold of one of them."
"She's ex-mafia."
Normally when people mention the mafia, there is usually visible shock, sometimes trembling. But with Oscar, there was nothing. Not to mention, he didn't ask another question despite his usually orientation to asking them incessantly. "You don't want to question that at all?"
He ignored me seemingly deep in thought.
"Hello?"
"And she lives in Moscow?"
I gave him a sigh, aware I was missing something. "That is what I said."
Only then did Oscar seem to be phased. His jaw was clenched tightly as though he was grinding down on his teeth. "I think I might know her." He finally said. "Mila Belova?"
I nodded carefully.
"My ex-girlfriend."
"You don't say." I said with a smile I could stop from appearing. This plot twist was one I had not seen coming. "Please tell me this is your tragic romance tale, the one about the girl you moved to Russia for, is it?"
Oscar's grip tightened. "The very same one."
"So, why did she leave?" I asked, despite it being glaring obviously he wanted the conversation to change.
Oscar's eyes didn't leave the road. "She told me her life was too dangerous for me to be involve with her." He let out a pained sigh. "She told me she was protecting me."
I didn't know what to say. I'd had my fair share of cutting people off because of the career I chose. I couldn't find the words to comfort him, so I kept quiet.
"You said ex-mafia." Oscar said quietly, breaking the silence.
"What?"
"You said that Mila was—" He took one hand off the steering wheel to put air quotes around his next words. "—ex-mafia."
"Yes, because she is." The stillness instantly returned to the car as I spoke.
I could hear Oscar's brain working, the gears grinding against each other as his breathing became faster. "How is that possible?"
"Well-"
"Why wouldn't she have come find me?" He interrupted. "She told me she could never get out. That it was her life." Oscar's rambling was frantic and the car began to swerve around on the road.
