When Duty Calls

Chapa climbed through her window and laid down on her bed. She wanted to go back and see Harper as soon as possible. She felt bad leaving Harper. But if she wanted to fight crime, she had to leave. Chapa laid on her bed and took her phone out. Chapa stared at the picture of Harper. Chapa loved it. Her door creaked open startling her. Chapa's little sister walked in and laid down on Chapa's bed.
"Get out of my room."
Chapa said coldly. Her sister nodded and proceeded to her parents room, shutting the door behind her. Chapa sighed and took out a red notebook from her desk, and grabbed a purple pen. She drew a heart in the center. And wrote one word in it. Harper. She smiled as she drew hearts around it and simple phrase too like, She's so silly, She's so sweet, She protects all of us. Chapa closed the notebook and placed it in her backpack. Chapa laid down and fell asleep thinking about Harper.

Chapa zapped her alarm as it rang loudly. She got up and smiled knowing she would see Harper if she moved faster. Chapa ran to her closet and grabbed a yellow and black plaid pants, black shirt, and white leather jacket. Chapa ran to the bathroom and jumped in the shower. Chapa got out and got dressed and ran downstairs to the kitchen. Chapa grabbed an apple and took a bite. She went to grab her backpack when she realized she didn't grab it. When Chapa went upstairs she heard a loud yell.
"Lula Elena Chapa De Silva! Get down here right now!"
Chapas eyes widened as she rushed downstairs with her phone in one hand, the apple in another. Her Mom held up a piece of paper. The piece of paper. Chapa felt her hands get clammy as she stared at it.

Harper fell off the couch, creating a loud 'thud'. She groaned as she realized it was morning. Harper ran to her bedroom and put on a white shirt and black leather jacket. She then went into her drawer and grabbed a blue and black pair of leggings. Harper put the clothes on and put a diamond earring in one ear, and a blue hoop in the other. Harper smiles as she looked at her outfit.
Harper ran to the kitchen, pushing Schwoz out of the way and grabbed an apple out of the bowl.
"Someone is happy today."
Schwoz said as he got up off the floor.
"Nope! Just wanna beat Mika and Miles."
Harper skipped into the Mans Nest, and went down the tub to the school. Harper sat proudly at her desk as she ate her apple. Harper pulled her phone out and texted Chapa.
Me: Hey you on your way?
Harper sent the text and waited patiently in the school room. Soon, Mika and Miles trudged in and stopped, eyes widening.
"How did you get here first?"
Mika asked. Harper jumped onto her desk and assumed a heroic position.
"It all just kinda happened! My Dad was an irresponsible scientist!"
They groaned as Harper laughed.
"Hey hows your arm dude?"
Harper looked down at her band aided arm.
"Not bleeding and it doesn't hurt."
Then Bose walked in.
"Hey guys! Wait! Why is Chapa at Harpers desk? And why is Harper not here yet?"
Harper jumped down and looked at Bose.
"Dude. I'm Harper. Chapa is-"
Then, Chapa pushed the door open, her face was red and she was clearly crying. There was a bruise on her cheek, and a small cut. Harpers eyes widened. They all looked at each other stressed. Harper ran to Chapa and gave her a big hug. Chapa just stood there silently. Harper wiped the tears off of Chapas cheeks and stared into Chapas eyes.
"What's wrong Chapa?"
Chapa grabbed Harper and hugged her tightly crying. Harper rubbed her back as they sat there. Then, Harper teleported the two to the closet for privacy.
"Chapa. You can tell me what's wrong. I won't laugh I promise you."
Chapa placed her hand on Harpers cheek and stared into Harpers eyes.
"My Mom..."
Was all she was able to croak out as she cried into Harpers shoulder. Harper rubbed Chapas back and hushed her.
"I got you. You're going to be okay. I promise."
Chapa adjusted herself in Harpers arms and started to calm down.
"Tell me when you're ready Chapa okay?"
Harper said, looking straight into Chapas eyes.
"Okay Harp."
The two walked out, but Chapa was still in Harpers arms. Harper and Chapa sat back down. As Ray talked, Harper inched her desk closer to Chapas. Once Harper was next to Chapa, she gave her a big smile and giggled. Harper focused and made a marker squiggle all over the board. This caused Harper to laugh and fall out of her chair, and crash on the floor with a bang. Ray rolled his eyes as he turned around.
"Harp- What happened to your desk? What happened to you?"
Everyone laughed Harper stood up and dusted herself off.
"I'm okay!"
Everyone including Chapa laughed hard at Harper. Ray rolled his eyes. Schwoz appeared on the board.
"Ray! We got a triple emergency!"
Harper jumped up and down!
"Triple the crime, triple the teeth, triple that sweet sweet coin from the tooth fairy!"
Harper smashes her red button and zoomed upstairs. Chapa was next to follow and then the others. Harper skipped around the Mans Nest in her uniform. She had her wrench and chainsaw ready.
"Chapa catch!"
Harper through a blaster at Chapa as she ran up to her.
"Schwoz said we have to take out some graffiti rats in the dark alley."
Chapa nodded as the two ran off. They could have teleported but they both wanted some alone time. As they ran, Harper constantly looked over to Chapas cheek. And when she did she hit a light post. Chapa thought it was funny.
"You're already beat up and we haven't even battled these dudes yet!"
After Harper hit a pole for the fifteenth time.
"I know I know. It's just that mark. It kind of. I don't know. Scares me."
Chapa frowned as she looked at Harper.
"I promise you I'm okay. Now stop hitting poles and let's go."
Harper smiles as they crept into the alley. Mika and Miles were off fighting the phone shark, while Ray and Bose fought Mr. Nice Guy.   Harper and Chapa slowly watched the teens paint the wall until Harper got bored.
"Put your hands in the air like you just DO care. Oh no. I'm telling Dad rhymes."
The teens turned around and smiled.
"Aww like little pig tails is going to hurt us."
Harper screamed as loud as she could sending them flying into the wall. Chapa jumped out and high-fived Harper. They both started zapping the teens until they were practically
fried. Then out of nowhere, an arm scooped Harper up and threw her against the wall, and blasted her. She fell weakly to the ground in pain. Chapa looked over and fried the man who threw Harper. Why are they giving Harper such a hard time? Chapa thought. Chapa picked up Harper and carried her towards the little bit of light that was flickering from a light post. Chapa held Harpers head in her lap as her eyes flew over her body. She saw where Harper was hit and pressed her two fingers up to her neck for a pulse. It was very slow and weak.
"Volt..."
Harper croaked.
"Yea Girl Danger?"
Chapa said as she felt tears swell up in her eyes.
"If I die, I want to tell you something."
Chapa broke down in tears and brushed Harpers face.
"You're not going to die Girl Danger. Stop being so silly."
Chapa stares off into Harpers eyes, remembering every second. Harper gasps for air as Chapa pushes slightly on her chest.
"I like you Volt. I'm sorry I put you through so much trouble. I'm s-sorry I was the reason your Mom slapped you."
Harper rested her head in Chapa's arms and her eyes fluttered close. Chapa cries as she sees Harper close her eyes. She feels for a pulse nothing. Chapa thinks quickly and zaps Harper. She feels again. Nothing. Chapa zaps harder. She feels nothing. Chapa stands up and gathers enough courage. She zaps Harper as strong as she can. Chapa falls to her knees and feels nothing. Chapas head falls into Harpers stomach. Then, a thump. Then another. And another. Chapa listens and hears Harpers heart. She drys her tears and kisses Harper out of pure joy. Harper places her hand on Chapas cheek.
"You were dead. You're heart stop working."
"I'm okay. It's okay. It's working now Volt."
Chapa holds Harper close to her as she hears a clap. The two look over to see the rest of the team smirking. Ray steps forward and smiles widely .
"Looks like we got two lovebirds in the Mans Nest."
Harper rolls her eyes.
"I just died. I don't wanna hear Dad jokes."
Ray squated down and brushed the little hair out of Harps face.
"Come on kiddo. Let's get you home."
Ray picks Harper up onto his hip.
"I can walk."
"Nah. I rather have you by my side."
"Ugh. Another Dad joke."
The team walked back to the school and sat back down in their chairs and went upstairs. Ray carried a sleeping Harper to the tube and went to the mans nest to meet up with the others. Then, Schwoz looked at Harper.
"Well she is alive. She doesn't have any broken bones. She just needs sleep."
Chapa smiled.
"Harp. Gum ball."
Harper grabs the Gum ball and chews it and blows a bubble. Harper smiles as she looks at Chapa.
"Come on guys downstairs. Let's continue class. Harp. Go to bed and rest up."
Harper groans.
"I don't wanna sleep."
Chapa grabs Harper's hand and looks at her.
"Harp you need sleep."
Harper nods and goes to walk to her room but stops in the doorframe. She turns her head and sighs.
"Do I have too. I'm fine. Really."
Ray sighs.
"Fine. Come on."
Harper giggles as she skips over to her chair. Harper just wanted to fool around. After sitting through class, Harper pulled Chapa to the side.
"Hey Harp what's wrong?"
Harper hugged Chapa as tight as she could.
"I got you Harper. Whatever is bothering you. You can tell me. I won't laugh."
Harper takes a deep breath and looks into Chapas eyes.
"W-why did you k-kiss me in the alley?"
Chapa sat there for a minute. Why did I kiss her?
"Because. I-I was scared that you were going to die. When you're heart started beating- I just felt so happy. And well yeah."
Harper smiles and hugged Chapa tighter.
"Did you uh. Really mean what you said before you almost died?"
Harper pulled away from the hug and stared guiltily at her feet.
"Yeah. It's okay if you don't feel the same since we just met and all th-"
Harper was cut off by Chapas lips colliding with hers.
"I feel the same way. But let's try to keep it a secret."
Harper smiles and nodded grabbing Chapas hand.
"Come on Ray wants us."
Chapa ran over to Rays desk while dragging Chapa behind her.
"Come on Chapa!"
Ray stood at the front of the classroom with his arm's crossed, and a sly smug on his face. When the girls got up in front of him, they dropped each other's hands.
"You too are so cute you know that?"
Harper stomped her foot.
"I'm not! Maybe totally Bitchen. But I am NOT CUTE!"
Chapa laughed as she stared at the floor.
"Listen. I'm allowing this for Harper and Chapa. But not for Girl Danger and Volt. You need to be serious when you work."
The girls nodded as they ran off hand in hand towards the door.
"Harper! Where are you going?"
"I'm walking Chapa home. I'll teleport back."
The girls walked the whole way to Chapas house in silence. Not an awkward one, but comfortable. When they got in front of Chapas house, Chapa turned around. She hugged Harper and smiled.
"If they hurt you, come to the mans nest. I take nightly laps. So I'll find you."
Chapa hugged Harper before running inside. Harper teleported home. Chapa walked in to her parents standing, waiting patiently in the living room.
"Lula Elena Chapa De Silva! It's 5 in the afternoon! Why are you home from school so late?"
Chapa looked around, wondering if it was too soon to go to the Mans Nest.
"Chapa! Where. Were. You!"
Chapa tried to say something but nothing came out.
"I was at Mika's house."
Her Mom sighed. Dinners in the fridge. Then shower and get to bed. Chapa nodded and went to do her routine.
