Wait, what?!

The last thing that I'd want today is to ruin the interview because of my fidgeting. I didn't enter the building, instead, I went to a nearby alley to calm down my nerves first. I closed my eyes and heaved out a sigh before deciding to return to the premises of that huge building. As soon as I was about to enter, my phone started ringing. I stopped to take a look at the username, but it showed 'unknown'.

I didn't have any time today to pick up unknown phone calls and waste fifteen minutes or so while telling them this is a wrong no. Or so I thought.

The phone kept ringing, so I finally picked it up. Before I could say 'hello', the man on the other side of the line asked in a raspy voice, "Emily Williams?"

I nodded hesitantly. It was then I realized that he couldn't see me nodding my head, when he asked me once again, "Are you Ms Williams?"

"Yes," I simply replied. "Who is on the line?"

He completely ignored my question, and said, "We have to take you".
Before I could process what he was saying, I felt someone's presence right behind me.

I turned around to see two people who looked like they jumped straight out of 'Men in Black'.  I gave them an awkward smile, when I realized that calming my nerves in such an isolated place was not the best idea.

"Hello, sirs.. You want to use this space? Well, go ahead.. I was just about to leave..." and with this, I tried to move past them. But they never budged. Instead, I felt two pairs of arms holding me by my shoulders and hands, and dragging me towards the end of the alley, where a white van was standing.

I felt as if land slipped from beneath my feet. Of course, I felt that, because, they practically lifted me up.

I was frantic. I tried to talk this out with them.
"Look, if you want money, then you are richer than me. And if you want me, then, don't you deserve better..?"

But, all in vain. By the time, I barely finished the little 'talk', we had already reached the van. The door opened, and I was shoved in.  I shut my eyes tight, excepting a sensation of cold metal at my temple.

When I didn't feel any, I opened my eyes slowly and cautiously, to find a man sitting right beside me, and staring at me intently. I just took a glance at him and looked away instantly. But I could tell that he was maybe in his mid-forties or something.

"There's no need for you to be afraid, young lady," I heard him say, and instantly recognized that voice as the one with whom I talked not so long before. "We aren't bad people."

"Yes. Of course, you aren't bad people. You are a kind gentle-man abiding by the laws and order of the society," I said, still avoiding eye contact.
I heard him sigh at my response. His phone rang, and I turned my head to steal a glance of his phone, then turned to face the door back immediately.

While he was talking, I tried fumbling the door lock, and it opened! I quickly threw the door ajar with the intentions of running for my life... but as soon as I opened it, the two men turned around to stare daggers in me.

I gave them a smile, and nodded my head before closing the door back.

What crazy luck!

As soon as the phone call ended, the man opened his mouth to say something. But I just started rambling out whatever came to my mind.

"Look, Mr x-y-z, I am just a normal girl who dressed up this morning to give a try at an interview for a job that I desperately need. If you want to sell me or threaten my family by kidnapping me, then you for sure chose the wrong person. My family is practically in dumps. And just look at my face.. Do you think anyone would bother to give me even a second look? No right! And that's not all, I am just rectangle! If you get what I mean.. No one would be interested to buy me... So, just let me go back to my interview, and you can wait here for another chick.. I will not--"

"I was the one who sent you the congratulatory mail."

"Oh, yeah. Thanks for that, but--" I stopped mid sentence. "You sent me what?"

"I sent you the mail, telling you that you got a job. Not that company," he took off his glasses and started cleaning them.

"W-what?" I suddenly felt like I stepped right in poop.

Wow! Just great! So, I was scammed. And yeah, of course it was a scam..! How was I so stupid to think that I passed the screenings of EDAM? Suddenly, I felt so... small...

He opened his laptop that was kept just beside him, and showed me the mail. My heart dropped to my stomach. "Do you still want to go in there, and make a fool out of yourself?" he asked. But his voice was not smeared with mockery or taunting.

I looked at him, my eyes as big as saucers. He closed the laptop and said, "I know what you're thinking, but, we are not those internet scammers. We sent you the mail to hire you, genuinely."

I was just staring at him, unsure of what to say. He continued, "You just have to do a little task for us. And the pay would be good enough, that I can say."

I continued to stare at him as he reopened his laptop, and showed me a photo. "You can sing pretty well, right?"

I was shifting my gaze between the screen and his face.
"How do you know that? Who are you?" My instincts kicked in. I dropped singing long time ago. And, here was this person, whom I have never seen in my entire life, showing me my picture of the singing contest that I went to almost three years ago.

Who is he? Was he stalking me? Another loan shark? Am I going to be a trouble for my already troubled father?

He softened his gaze, maybe because he noticed the glimpse of shakiness in my irises. My eyes never left him when he skillfully moved his fingers on the key-board. He showed me another picture. Picture of a boy, who was around my age.

"Your job is simple, pay is better. We want you to become a pacemaker."
