genre: fluff? i guess? it's kinda just him pining hashsh
warnings: none!tamaki falls in love w a girl at a grocery store -- will he do anything abt it?
the little heart of his that swelled with resolve when someone was in danger was choking him. he felt it crawl up his throat, climbing its way out as if running away, and he knew where it would go if the metaphor was real.
he was in civilian clothes, a surgical mask hiding the part of his face that his bangs didn't cover, but across from him in the produce aisle was the prettiest woman he'd ever seen in his life. she was inspecting the fruit, a reusable bag in her left hand as she combed through the apples with her right. his eyes kept flicking from the apples to her face. he swallowed and felt it get caught in his throat like he was a nervous teenager again.
his stiffness and staring must have crept up her spine, as she looked up to lock eyes with him. he felt his breath catch at the sight -- they were warm, catching the lights of the store like gems. after a brief second had passed between them, he dropped his gaze. his heart pounded against the cage of his chest and he tried to focus himself.
but when he went to look again, she was staring at him already. it seemed as though she hadn't stopped staring to begin with, and instead was frozen with an apple in her hand. he looked away again, embarrassed.
"hey, i don't mean to pry, but... are you a hero? suneater?" a tender voice asked in a whisper. he looked to her, his dark eyes showing surprise. he'd decided after a couple years at fatgum's agency to transfer and become an underground hero -- there was less press coverage and therefore less chance of being recognized in public spaces like the grocery store.
tamaki pulled down his mask and let out a timid "i am" looking around to see if anyone had heard and/or cared.
"wow, i'm sorry, but could i get an autograph?" she asked. "i remember when you worked with fatgum -- i was one of your fans back when i was still in high school and you were just an intern," she said with a laugh, "i hope you don't mind me asking..."
he didn't mind it at all. moments ago he was praying for an excuse to interact with her, and one had landed in his lap like a gift from the heavens. "n-no, not at all," he said, breathless. "uh." he patted himself down, looking for a pen.
she came around the side of the produce display and offered him her grocery list with a pen. he tried not to intrude on her privacy, but his eyes ran down the list anyways as he signed the bottom. "s-squid, huh?" he said. his eyebrows drew together and he sighed at himself. "sorry, i'm the worst at small talk," he apologized.
she laughed, covering her smile with her hand. it was such a beautiful sound. "that's fine, i'm sure you're busy... i'll stop bothering you," she said. his head was tilted to look at her, a soft smile coming to his face at her kindness. the brief silent pause made him think for a minute -- why was she still standing there? he looked back to his hands to see the pen and paper.
"oh! sorry, i... s-spaced out... there." tamaki cleared his throat, handing the items back to her. he pulled his mask over his face the moment she took them back, trying to hide the blush coming to his cheeks.
she laughed again, that sweet sound filling him with butterflies. "i knew you were bad with crowds a couple years ago, i didn't think you would still be like this, though," she said.
he didn't know how to explain that he had gotten a bit better around crowds, but that her pretty face had tied his tongue in knots. "yeah, i..." he trailed off.
"you..."
"d-do you mind if i write something else on that list for you?" he asked, his eyes finding the floor. she tentatively handed him back the paper, and he scribbled something quickly. after handing her the list, he bowed and walked away -- almost flinging everything in his basket onto the floor from the force in which he picked it up off the ground, booking it to self check-out.
she was left in front of the apples, staring at the bottom of her grocery list in shock. suneater had scrawled down his phone number. a surprised little smile came to her face as she tucked the paper into her pocket.
