I rush through the village. There are so many things I have never seen before. I avoid the king's guards and try to find the resistance flag anywhere. I have a cloak I stole from a hanger to cover up my suit. I feel so disoriented and dizzy. Everything is so bright and so new and so scary. I look to see tents upon tents of people with collections of things. One of them has food. Some loaves of bread that make my stomach growl. I walk up to him.
"Excuse me sir, could you spare some bread?" I ask nervously. He laughs at me and I looks down at the floor.
"You really think I'm going to give bread away for free. Only a guard could ask such a thing." He continues laughing. Wait, guards can take what they want? I pull off my cloak enough for him to see and he freezes.
"Oh I am so sorry mam, you just seemed a little young to be a guard." He says, "take as many loaves as you need." He steps away from his table. I grab five loaves shoving them into my pockets.
"Thank you sir." I say walking off. He nods at me.I sit under a tree at the end of the village and at the beginning g of the Forrest. I take some of my bread out and start eating. It's nothing like the academy's bread but it's still good nonetheless. A small beast, crawls up to me staring at my bread. It is brown and has a black stripe down it's back with a very fluffy tail. I break off a small piece of my bread and throw it at him. I grab it and climbs up another tree. I watch him curiously as he goes into a hole in the truck with the bread. Suddenly there is a twig snap and I turn back to the road I walked to the forest from. There is an old man walking my way. I get up and back away so he stops.
"Hello little girl. Are you alright?" He asks me. I quickly grab my coat and put it over my suit.
"Don't talk to me like I'm a little girl, I'm-I'm a guard." I say defensively.
"You awful young to be a guard." He says stepping closer.
"G-get away." I say backing away again.
"I just would like to help you." He says. I pick up a stick and get into fighting stance. I feel my eyes glow blue and I can see that he will just wait for me there. I relax a little then there is a sound above me. I look up and the last thing I see is a young boy jumping down at me with a sack. He throws the sack over me and I struggle. I feel something hard hit my head and I pass out.I wake up in someone's house tied to a chair. I start breathing heavily and try to pull against my restraints. The boy walks in to the room and sits down in a chair across from mine.
"What is this?" He pulls the green patch out of his pocket.
"Hey give that back! It belonged to my friend!" I yell trying to rock the chair.
"What friend?" He asks me.
"I'm not telling you, your a creep! Give it back!" I yell. He sighs and put it back in his pocket.
"You're from the academy aren't you." He says. I go silent and he sighs.
"What's your number?" He asks me.
"I'm not a number I'm a person." I growl at him. He raises an eyebrow.
"I don't expect you to remember your name." He says.
"Kiara!" I snap at him.
"Interesting, you seem pretty rebellious Kiara." He says. I glare at him as he takes out the green patch to fiddle with.
"If you think for one second you are taking me back to that hell hole-" I start.
"Woah, woah, that's not why we took you." He says. Now it's my turn to raise an eyebrow.
"My girlfriend was taken recently. She is about your age, brown hair, same height as you, extremely stubborn." He says.
"Bear has a boyfriend!?!" I say in shock.
"So you do know her!" He says smiling for the first time. I feel hurt, like I was just stabbed in the back.
"Yeah... she was my roommate." I say bitterly. His smile grows.
"See uncle Lar, I knew she was alive." He says looking at his doorway. The old man walks through the doorway and nods.
"Yes Garret, we need to retrieve her." He says sternly. I want to punch this guy, I want to flip him into the dirt and show off how much better I am at fighting than he is. He only caught me by surprise, I could kill him in one foul swipe. The guy looks at me and his eyes start glowing. He looks me up and down she furrows his eyebrows.
"Don't try anything." He says while his eyes turn back to normal. I grunt and wiggle in my chair. "If she escaped there has to be a way to sneak in." Lar says.
"How did you escape?" Garrett asks me.
"Me and Bear were going to jump out of a five story window into a lake but the guards got her first. She told me to find the resistance... which I'm guessing is you." I groan. Lars walks over to my chair and unties me. I immediately get up and take a swing at him but his eyes turn blue as he flips me onto my back.
"Relax little girl." He says. I growl at him and stand but up reluctantly. "Let go to the resistance, with you coming fresh from the academy, we can finally get some information." He says making Garret give him the patch. He reaches over to give me the patch and I quickly pull it to my chest and wrap both arms around it. I can't believe Bear didn't tell me she had a boyfriend."She could be a spy!" One man yells.
"You shouldn't this taken her here!" Another
"We should kill her!"
"She work for them!"
We are standing on some sort of stage underground. It seems to be like some sort of main hall for the resistance headquarters. Everyone was called to a meeting to discuss what to do with me. The screaming stops when a man sitting in what looks like a thrown raises his hand. He has a cloak over him but even with it you can tell he's strong and tall. He stands up and goes to the front of the platform stage. He turn to me and takes his hood off. His eyes glow blue and he has a scar down his cheek. He has dark brown hair that resembles something familiar, only I can't put my finger on it. I stand there nervously.
"What is your number?" He asks me in a deep voice.
"I'm a- I- my name is Kiara." I say, "Well m-my number was 129 but I don't like th-that. I'm a fourth year group which is the oldest one... a-and my fr-friend Bear told me to come here." I say explaining everything. I fiddle with the patch she gave me in my pocket. At the mention of Bear everyone seems to gasp. The mans eyes never stop glowing blue but his expression changes.
"You've met my sister?" He questions me. I raise my eyebrows.
"She has a brother?" Why didn't she tell me these things. The crowd laughs a little until Bears brother holds his hand up.
"Yes, my name is Rowan, I'd like to talk to you more about this subject in private but right now I assume you need rest. Someone prepare a room for her!" He shouts. Their is controversy in the crowd but Rowan glares at them and they all rush to do whatever they need to do. A man takes my arm and pulls me down a hall to a room with a bed and drawers. It barley resembles my quarters back at the academy. What have I gotten myself into.I sit at a table in this meeting hall place with a bunch of older rebels. They are all talking and most of the 'facts' they are saying about the academy are wrong.
"We know they graduate in two moons." Rowan talks for the first time the whole meeting. His eyes still glowing blue, I wonder if they ever stop. Everyone goes quiet and turns to him.
"Actually it's one moon." I say, "and at the academy they are called months." Everyone glares at me and I yawn.
"How could you be so disobedient with only one month of training left, wouldn't you already be guard like by now?" One man with a beard asks.
"They start to really pick up the training on the last month. That's why we tried to escape." I explain.
"Then we need to get Bear out of there before they manipulate her into working for them." He says slamming a dagger on the table. So that's where Bear gets her love for daggers.
"I doubt they will allow her to graduate, they will probably hold her back a year because of her escape." I say resting my head on my hand. This is pointless, they are never going to get into the academy.
"Well we are still retrieving her so she won't be tortured-" he starts.
"They don't torture you there, it's a school." I laugh. I can tell everyone at the table hates me but honestly I've had a shit day and I don't care. Rowan raises an eyebrow at me to explain. "They just train you, of course there is whippings and shocking if you don't cooperate but it's not like they keep you in a jail cell or pry thing out of you." I say. A younger guy in glasses at the corner of the table is writing everything down on a notepad. Garret it grinding his teeth across from him.
"You should show him some respect." Garret says through his teeth.
"Well I'm sorry if I'm a little cranky, I didn't plan on being kidnapped today." I say through mine. He starts to stand up but Rowan puts his hand up and he sits back down.
"Would more resting time help clear your head miss Kiara?" He asks me, staring at me with his glowing eyes.
"No thank you I'm fine." I say. Rowan is confusing, but then again Bear is too. He pulls out a map of the academy and asks me to correct it.
