After watching the sun slowly rise, crowds of people began to swarm the beach. By ten am there was already close to thirty thousand on the beach. At first I was placed down the North corner with Ryan as it was the quietest part of the beach meaning that I could slowly ease into the lifeguarding role. As we didn't have many rescues I was able to get to know Ryan more, he had told me about how he was maxis cousin and how he liked to compete in traithalons. I found it easy to talk to Ryan, probably because we were both close in age. He asked me questions about my life, he asked about my family, my friends and why I wanted to become a lifeguard. As I was in the middle of telling him some of my favourite memories from school a call came over the radio asking me to move from patrolling the North corner with Ryan to patrollibg the middle set of flags with Jake.
Jake's POV
As I heard the call come over the radio asking Lu to come down to the flags to help me I began to smile. It meant that I could get to know her more and spend time with her. She came running over, her tan on show and her long blonde hair cascading down her back. The vibe and energy she gave off was contagious, I couldn't help but softly laugh. Between us, the conversation flowed so easily. There was never a dull moment with Lu around! Not long after she came over there was a call on the radio saying how there was someone wayyyy out the back of the flags about 200m from shore.Lu's POV
I wanted to prove myself to my fellow lifeguards so told Jake that I would go out and to the rescue. I admit I was terrified as this was the first rescue that I would do but I was also scared at the fact the swimmer was so far out and the water out the back was so murky and sharky. Without thinking anymore I threw off my shirt, grabbed the board and began the long paddle out to the swimmer. It was difficult at first as I had to get around all of the people swimming in the flags. The waves were pretty small so I was able to quickly get out. Once I reached the patient I began to order him to climb onto my board, lie on his tummy and face the front. He understood this and we started heading back to the shore. The ride was smooth, I didn't lose the patient and I didn't nose dive which I was impressed with considering this was the first rescue I had done. Once we were safely back to shore, the man came up to me and gave me the biggest hug. "You saved my life thank you so much!" he said in a strong Irish accent. "I didn't realise how far out I'd got". His mates all came up to him laughing and joking as I walked off back to Jake in the buggy. "that was impressive for your first rescue" I heard chappo say over the rescue. It meant a lot to me as he was a senior lifeguard and I knew he would have to report back to hoppo at the end of the day to tell him how I got on. Jake got out from the driver's side of the buggy and embraced me in a big hug. "That was sick!" his morning raspy voice said. I started to blush so ran round to the back of the buggy to grab my towel and my shirt. I turned to look at Jake to see his cheeks slightly blushing too. I mean he was only a few years older than me but I never thought that he would like me?? Nah I bet he doesnt?Authors Note
