Chapter 1

Hi I'm Louella, Lu for short. It had been my dream to become a bondi lifeguard. I had grown up watching bondi rescue and fell in love with the location and the lifeguards. Every time that I was asked what my dream job was I'd say how I wanted to become a bondi lifeguard and every person I told just laughed telling me how I would never make it. Oh how I wanted to prove them wrong. I had spent hours of my life researching about the job, the requirements, the training I would have to complete in order to reach my dream. I grew up in Maroubra and spent my whole childhood learning to surf. Someone who I looked up to a lot was Jesse Pollock. He always looked out for me, he was like an older brother to me. He gave me tips on things I could do to improve my surfing and always told me I could do anything that I put my mind to. So one day he came to me saying how there was a traineeship going at bondi, he knew it was my dream to work there, and encouraged me to go down to the trials. Could I get my dream job at 17?

~~Skip to the day of the tests~~
I woke to the ringing sound of my alarm. I rolled over to see the time. 5:30am. I had to be down to the pool by seven am and as it was a little drive away I'd made sure to wake up with lots of time to spare. I slumped out of bed and searched through the drawers to find my favourite swimsuit. See, what I should've done was lay out what I wanted to do the night before so that I could easily find it, however, I hadn't so here I was half asleep trying to locate my swimsuit. I finally found it, it was a toned down yellow and white checkered one piece. Due to growing up surfing and swimming, I didn't really have any curves but this bather managed to somehow show off what little curves I did have. After showering and getting changed, it was time to leave for the trials. Jesse offered to take me as he was going to as all lifeguards have to redo the test each year and as he was my neighbour it just made sense. As I was heading out the door I grabbed an apple to eat in the car on the way, I was extremely nervous so didn't feel like eating much.

After the thirty minute drive, Jesse and I arrived at the pool. He could sense my nerves so gave me a reassuring hug telling me to relax and that I would smash the trials. I placed my bag down on a chair overlooking the pool to see a room full of men. I was the female here. I began to frantically scan the room, looking for some hope of seeing another female. I was so zoned out at this time that I hadn't even noticed the lady who had walked up to me. "Hey I'm Jules" she said softly, her voice so calming, she could sense my nerves. "I was nervous for my first trails too, I didn't know how I'd be able to cope in an all male environment". It's like she could read my mind. "But hey, it looks like I won't be alone now" she said as she shot me a hopeful smile. Shortly after my interaction with Jules, it was time for my trial to begin. As soon as I hit the water I knew that I would have to give the swim everything that I'd got. I pinned it, swimming the fastest that I had ever swam in my life. I had to compete this swim within thirteen minutes. I was a pretty strong swimmer so had confidence in my self that I'd be able to do it. As I came onto my final lap I noticed that there was no longer anyone swimming in the lanes next to me. Was I really that far behind? As I finished my swim and my head came out of the water I was surrounded by looks of amazement and shock. Not only has I complete the swim in the time limit, I had smashed it finishing in nine minutes. As I climbed out of the pool, Hoppo came to talk to me. I admit, I was terrified. "Congratulations" he said "welcome to the team, we're delighted to have another female joining, you'll be an inspiration to many". I couldn't believe it, i was going to be a lifeguard! "You'll start on Monday at 6 am sharp, I'll meet you out side my office". Confused I questioned why I did not need to complete any board tests. "Don't worry" hoppo continued "jesses told us lots about you and he's shown us many videos of you, you'll be an asset to our team".

Jesse and Jules came over to congratulate me along with some others. "You were unstoppable" Jules exclaimed as she ran over to hug me. I could tell me and her were going to be best friends immediately. "Yeah that was sick" Jesse said following Jules. They then introduced me to Harrison, Maxi, Max and Jake. They all hugged me but I didn't think much of it until I got to Jake. His tattooed torso walking closer to mine, a friendly smile plastered over his face. I could feel myself slightly blushing so quickly hugged him. I couldn't believe it. My dream had come true!
