Don't Hold Back

"Hey girl! Thanks for inviting us, I really needed this; there was literally nothing in my fridge!" The red-haired boy shouted towards living room while taking his shoes off.

"Us?" A soft voice shouted back from the room next to us. "Did you bring Reggie too?"

Nice. He could've even asked the owner of the apartment before inviting me to a dinner here. But no, this was Archie, he never thought about these things.

I left my shoes next to the door too and followed him further into the small but beautifully decorated apartment.

"No, I asked him but he was busy. So I brought Veronica instead." Archie happily informed.

"What did you say?" The voice wasn't so soft anymore. "You brought her?" No, it was more shocked, almost fearful.

Warm welcome. Maybe this idea wasn't as good as Archie had told it to be.

"Uh, hi." I shyly said to the blond girl that was now standing in front of us.

She turned to me with wide eyes. Her intensive gaze felt pretty uncomfortable, as her eyes wandered over me, from my face to my toes. Her mouth was slightly open, and her breathing was heavy.

I couldn't understand why she was acting so weird around me now. Had I done something wrong?

"Arch, can we talk for a sec?" She asked and forced her eyes back to him.

The boy next to me nodded and followed her to the kitchen.

"I don't know why this is so big deal now, I thought you two were friends." I heard him mutter while they walked away from me.

So thought I. And we were. Or used to be. Close friends even. But lately, she had been acting weird around me, and I couldn't tell why.

After few minutes they came back to where I was still standing. She walked her head down, clearly avoiding my gaze, and sat down on the couch.

Quickly I grabbed Archie's hand before he could join her.

"What the hell is going on?" I whispered to his ear.

"What do you mean?"

I shot a deadly glare at him. "Have I done something? Does she hate me?"

"No, Ronnie." He sighed. "You've done nothing wrong. And no, she doesn't hate you, nobody does."

"So you're saying that she has no reason to act so weird all the time?" Even though I was confused for real, my voice was dripping sarcasm.

"No...there is a reason. But I think that's something you two should discuss." He carefully stated. "Just, don't worry about it. Be like nothing ever happened, ok?"

"Okay, I guess I will." I promised, still extremely confused what was going on.

I followed Archie in the living room. There she was, sitting on her white couch, looking at her phone.

I decided to get closer to her, and sat on the couch next to her. She didn't see me, as she was so focused on her phone. But then our eyes met. Immediately she jumped up, and cleared her throat.

"Sorry, did I scare you?"

She didn't say anything.

"Betty, is something wrong?" I asked her softly. "Just sit down."

She just nodded and carefully sat back next to me. I noticed how tense she was. I tried to sooth her by placing my hand over hers, but she only tensed more, so I took it off.
