It's close to five forty-five when Naruto gets a text from his mother.
"I've gotta go. She says that dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes and if I'm not home by then, I don't get any," he says, grinning.
"Oh. Well," I look back to the TV screen and frown. "Finish this round or no?"
"Hell yeah," he agrees, and we both return to our team. In a few minutes, we've won, and I'm turning off my Kinect and Naruto is pulling on his tennis shoes.
"Thanks for hanging out. It's been nice," I say to him, sighing at the fact that he had to go. "We should do it next weekend."
"Yeah, that sounds awesome," he agrees, embracing me in a hug. "Keep working on our city in Minecraft, 'kay?"
"Of course," I agree, and I walk him to my front door. "Naruto?"
He looks back to me, and I reach to tiptoe and kiss his cheek.
"Thanks for everything," I whisper, and he smiles.
"Anything for you, Akemi. I'll talk to you in class Monday, if not sooner," he says, and I nod as he heads out to his truck. It comes to life, and I see him wave before he heads off down the road.
I sigh and close the door, locking it behind me. I head back to my Kinect and almost turn it back on. I decide that I've had enough games for one day. I see my phone, completely unmoved from earlier and pick it up to plug it into the charger in my room.
When I do, an unread message pops up.
Hey, I've been waiting for you to text me first but I can see that won't be the case. I really want to talk to you and try and settle all of this. I miss you, Akemi, and I want to fix this. Please call me whenever you can, if you're willing to talk.
Oh fuck.
How had I forgotten?
Wait... Isn't that what I had been trying to do? Isn't that what I've wanted for the past month? To forget?
I frown and pick up my phone, sliding the message over before typing in my password. His name appears, as well as the lone message he had sent me this morning.
I fall back onto my bed and groan.
What should I do? Should I call him? Should I ignore him?
If I call him... Should I hear him out? Give him a chance? Or should I remind him that things were over? Tell him that I wanted to forget him?
God, why was this so complicated?
I sigh and cover my eyes with my arm.
What to do, what to do...
Finally, I decide that I'll at least hear his plea, and from there... From there, I'll decide what to do.
I pick up my phone, realizing that my hands are shaking. I take a deep breath and will my hands to stop shaking as I press call and hold my phone up to my ear.
I'm almost afraid that it'll go to voicemail before I hear it click. There's no noise, but it's no longer ringing.
"Akemi?"
My resolve cracks. I haven't prepared myself to hear him, not even just in casual talk.
"Sasuke," I whisper, biting my bottom lip. I hear a long sigh on his end of the phone.
"Your voice is still like a drug to me."
My heart leaps, and I choke back a gasp. I force my voice to be steady, calm.
