With a groan at my somewhat sore back, I turned over... Into a wall of muscle. I blinked, realizing that the skin colored... Body, that's what it was, in front of me was actually my boyfriend.
God, he had abs of steel. I ventured a glance upwards and saw his chest rising and falling steadily, his right arm curled up under his pillow.
Oh, my poor baby looked so cute when he was asleep. He had a rough day yesterday, what with the fight and getting himself hurt and barely winning.
I gently wrapped an arm around his upper torso, which was about where my face was level right now, and nuzzled into him. He was so warm and cozy...
I awoke again, this time to the feeling of someone touching my hair.
"I didn't mean to wake you," he murmurs when I look up to his face, still playing with my hair.
"No, you di-" a yawn broke through my lips before I could finish my statement, "dn't."
"Did you sleep well?" he asks quietly, like it was of the utmost importance or something.
"Yeah, perfect. You're so warm, you're like my own personal space heater," I mutter before yawning again.
"I kept you up, didn't I? You keep yawning," he says.
"No, I'm just still really tired but I don't know why," I return. "What time is it?"
He reaches over me, his abdomen twisting over me just slightly in a glorious display of muscle to grab his phone from the nightstand and pull it off the charger.
"7:17," he answers, not even cringing when the bright light from his phone shone on his face.
"It's too early," I whine, pressing my face into his stomach and blowing a raspberry. I felt his muscles contract as he pulled away from the foreign feeling.
"A-Akemi," he gasps, and I can't help but laugh. I had made him stutter! I had made the most serious guy in Kohona stutter!
"Why are you up so early?" I ask him, propping myself up onto an elbow.
"I didn't really sleep well last night," he mutters, obviously flustered by my previous actions.
"Why not?" I ask. "Was it because I was here? Why didn't you tell me?"
"It's not that," he reassures me. "I just had a lot on my mind."
He rolls over onto his back and looks at his ceiling for a second before closing his eyes.
He's silent for a few moments, and I decide to speak up.
"Like what?" I ask softly.
"Just... This is my last chance, Akemi. This is my last chance to do something great in this school. My last chance to make the playoffs," he sighs, and looks over at me. "You wouldn't understand. Your old school probably had it all."
I smile at him ruefully, even though he doesn't see it.
"No, we didn't. The volleyball team made it to area, and the track team had a few qualifiers in regionals. That's it. Our football team went 0 and 10. Our basketball team only won a quarter of their games. And the band... We got threes and every once in a while a two from the judges in band. We weren't good," I explain. "I'm so glad I moved to Kohona. I do understand because I feel exactly the same way. This is my last chance to make regionals in track. My last year playing in the band. I want to be known for something, too."
"Akemi, it's not like that," he contradicts.
"Like that?" I ask. "How is it not?"
"I have to do this. My brother made playoffs his sophomore and senior year. I've only made it once. He advanced to area in track. I've only ever made it to regionals. Everything he does," he scoffs, then looks at me, "he's better at than me."
