Title: Pieces of Me
Author: ShaunAllan
Reading time: two to three hours
Genre: introspective poetry
Review:
From stark contrasts to clever paradoxes, this poetry collection includes some of the most powerful figurative language I've read in a while. Using the recurring symbolism of water, darkness and light, dreams, and seasons, the author delves into the deep inner world of emotion and makes it palpable for the reader.
The short poems are perfect for people on the go. If you want a quick read that will make you think, this is for you. It will make you question your perception of the external and internal world.
Though it does include some dark themes--such as loss, sadness, death, and self-doubt--there are no distressing images or graphic depictions of violence. It also contains hope, love, and resilience.
As such, I classify it as psychological/introspective poetry rather than horror. To me, that's a good thing. In these dark times we need works that address the tough times while giving us glimpses of the light.
On a more personal note, I found these poems struck a chord in me. They're relatable. Deeply meaningful. That's what powerful, evocative poetry does. It gripped me and never let go as I binge-read the entire collection in one go. I hope there are many more poems to come.
You really shouldn't miss this poetry collection.
