Review

This phenomenal poetry collection grabbed me by the hand and never let go. With their minimalist style, the author addresses the dark themes of abuse and pain but also expresses hope and love. This natural balance makes their work an unforgettable and inspiring read.

Though I would recommend it for 18+ readers due to the dark themes, there is no graphic or starkly visceral depictions. Rather the author cleverly uses figurative language and symbolism to address these difficult issues in a way that drives empathy without being overly triggering.

In this way, it contrasts strongly to their other work, Revolution, in which detailed, lingering descriptions of abuse assault the senses. And yet, I almost feel as though this work--though not as horrifying--hits me just as hard emotionally, if not in some ways more.

Because I could binge-read the entire narrative, I accompanied the speaker on every step of their struggle. Every subsequent poem takes us through trying life experiences as the speaker garners a stronger sense of self-worth and hope. As the collection continues, the speaker takes their experience and imparts their wisdom with us readers.

My only critique would be this: I would have liked to see one last poem (or even a few poems) as they go from their lowest point to a sense of resolution. It ended on a painful note. And while I respect that narrative choice, it would have been nice to see a bit more hopeful tone thanks to the development in the character arc.

Still, this comes highly recommended.
