Review:
All I have to say is: What a delight for the senses!
Even though I'm the furthest thing from a sensory thinker -- if anything, I'm more conceptual -- this work defied my natural tendencies and allowed me to sink into a rich fantasy world. As a writer who struggles with description, I can only sit here speechless. Such mastery!
A young woman travels from door to door in a way that reminds me quite a bit of the iconic story Alice in Wonderland. A trippy, dreamlike quality permeates the book. But it never quite launches itself into the surreal. Instead, it remains firmly fixed in reality thanks to a narrative of rich description that follows the hero's journey or the seasons or the decades of life. Take your pick.
Seemingly idyllic in some worlds and catastrophic in others, the female protagonist journeys from one door to the next until she reaches the last door. I won't spoil it for you, but if you enjoy lyrical prose that allows you to sink into a world of the senses, don't miss this stellar short story.
Just remember: If you read it, you're there for the journey, not the destination.
If I had one criticism it's that at times it crosses that fine line between gorgeous description and purple prose. And yet, I stand in awe of an author who can create ten distinct worlds with so few words. That takes real skill and mastery of the craft.
