The rain poured down as I rushed towards the church. I knew this was a mistake a big mistake at that but I had to keep going.

My feet collided with the ground they were sore and red but there was nothing I could do now. The footsteps of those behind me were getting louder and louder by the second. My breathing was getting heavier and I knew my legs would give out at any moment. The screams and shouts of the people behind me continued on.

I stumbled and almost tripped a few times as I made it to the back of the church. My heartbeat had only sped up even more. The back door remained open and my eyes darted back realizing I was out of options.

If there was one place they'd never step inside it would be here.

I nervously gulped as I pushed the door open enough to let me in. The footsteps had slowly stopped and the forest had gone quiet. No more shouting and no more screaming.

I peeked outside the door to see they had stopped right in their place. Their faces looked mortified as they stared at the old building and just like that they were gone.

There was a reason no one ever stepped within these lands.

Those who went would never return.

And I would be no exception.

I shifted around in my seat my eyes darting around the old tavern as a small cup of water sat in front of me. I was too nervous to take even a sip of it.

The sound of a chair scraping against the ground caught my attention and I slowly brought my head up.

"Hey kiddo why do you look so down?"

"You know exactly why..." I mumbled staring back down at my water.

"I know Y/N but listen life—"

"No Tanjiro. I don't want to. I don't want to marry that man."

"Y/N—"

"He's gross and a pervert! He's beyond ungrateful you know it would never work! Please Tanjiro don't let them.." A small pout tugged at my lips as they began to quiver.

"Y/N you know they won't listen to me. Your parents are only trying to do what's best for you. They only see the appearance he gives off."

"But I don't want to marry him the truth is I don't even want to marry anyone they pick!"

A gasp was heard from the crowd as Tanjiro quickly put a hand over my mouth.

"Haha don't worry folks she wants her big brother to pick nothing to worry about!"

The crowd stared suspiciously back at Tanjiro but shrugged it off and went back to their own business.

I tilted my head up slightly and Tanjiro darted his eyes to my own.

"Don't say stuff like that so loud!" He whispered.

I let out an annoyed grunt before crossing my arms.

"Listen Y/N you know how they feel about this kind of stuff. If you go around screaming all that they'll chase you out of town or worse hang you!"

A small shiver ran down my spine at his words and I glanced around the room.

It was a small village I lived in where everyone knew everyone. Occasionally there would be visitors but it was not often. Most people avoided this place at all costs and in the end, I couldn't blame them.

There really wasn't that much wrong with the people in this village it was just their way of life that I somehow grew out of.

I dropped down to the ground my breathing heavy as I stared at the room around me. It was huge the building seemed to look small on the outside but it was actually really big. A shiver ran down my spine at the sound of footsteps and I quickly hid by a nearby pillar. I pushed myself up against the wall trying my hardest to blend in with the shadows. The footsteps disappeared and I let out a breath I didn't know I was even holding.

Deciding now wasn't the time to think I peeked out from behind the pillar to look around the room. There was a large red carpet that led down the middle of the room it stopped before some thrones. The strange thing was before it could reach the thrones a large pit surrounded it.

There were many rumours circling this place. But after seeing the people here it was beginning to look like one of them was certainly true.

This place was not for the likes of normal civilians.
