Preshani squinted in anguish then grunted when her alarm sounded again that morning. She forced herself out of bed after deciding she wasn't going to be late on her first day of school. She made her way down the stairs of the 3 bedroom loft to her overly cheerful two best friends in the open plan kitchen. "Hey sunshine", Dineo greeted the girl sarcastically. "Oh darling, I hope you don't feel as bad as you look", Mariska said also deciding to mock the girl. Preshani let out sigh and made her way to the coffee machine, ignoring her friends.
"See this is what happens when you spend the whole night talking to your boyfriend while the rest of us get a good night sleep", Mariska continued as she moved closer to the girl to give her a kiss on the cheek. "He's not my boyfriend", Preshani defended casually pouring coffee into her mug then took a seat on the kitchen island.
She hated how true that was, that Mike wasn't her boyfriend. They'd spent most of the festive season together but they still hadn't had the conversation. The conversation she was sure he was avoiding.
He'd gone home after their trip to Sun City to spend a little time with his family before he had to return back for school. They hadn't seen each other since he left, but they'd spoken everyday on the phone, for hours. Preshani hated to be just another cliche but she was falling for the boy, hard. She knew she needed to have a talk with him before it was too late.
"Are we meeting the group later?", she asked choosing to ignore her ranting thoughts. "Uh, maybe not. I'm sure we'll be tired. You know how first days are", Dineo said cautiously then gave the girl a death glare. "Don't miss this again on my account. Eventually you're going to have to meet up with them", Mariska said as she scrolled through her phone.
It was true. Preshani and Dineo had been avoiding meeting and talking about the group in front of her. Things had been different since the fallout at the sunny resort a month before and they didn't want their friend to feel excluded, since everyone else in the group seemingly took Tyrone's side in the drama. The group had practically been split into two.
They'd all promised each other during the festive to try and spend as much time with one another as possible, they didn't want what happened the previous year to happen again. But that was looking more and more unlikely.
Preshani and Dineo hoped that things would go back to how they were, but until then, they were sticking with their best friend. They didn't necessarily agree with what she'd done but they didn't like how everyone treated her because of it. She was drunk and she did something stupid, they'd all been there.
After having breakfast and getting ready, the girls set about going to school. They were going to have a good first day.
As Mariska walked down the halls of the faculty of law, she sensed a bit of heaviness she'd never sensed before. She'd walked in the building too many times but there was something uneasy about being there that day. Like something or someone would just show up and the rest of her day would go to shambles.
She'd shared about three lectures with both Tyrone and Ntombi and she was sure they wouldn't be most excited to see her. She truly was sorry for her actions but it wasn't like she lied. Tyrone was the one who cheated on his girlfriend and somehow she was the bad guy. Sure she'd been the one who initiated it but he could've stopped at any point. It wasn't like she'd held a gun to his head.
Mariska made her way into the criminal law lecture. She looked around the room filled with her peers and instantly locked eyes with the brown boy. She felt a spark in her stomach at the intense gaze he was giving, but that was only short lived as the boy's face turned cold after. She knew he was mad but damn.
She continued to look around for a seat when she noticed Ntombi sitting on the other side of the class. She hadn't seen the couple in a while but she assumed they'd worked out their issues and stayed together.
Tyrone had been sitting and laughing with Mike when he locked eyes with the girl. For a second he felt a familiar feeling he'd always felt at her presence. That went away as soon as it came.
To say Tyrone was disappointed at what Mariska had done was not saying anything at all. Yes he cheated on his girlfriend but it wasn't her place to tell her. Especially because she wanted him for herself.
Tyrone had known the girl for a long time and he'd never thought she would stoop that low to get what she wanted.
Hate was a big word but he didn't think he would ever look at the girl the same again.
He could still remember when Ntombi called him crying in the middle of the night asking if it was true. Asking him why he would do that to her.
The boy decided to push aside his thoughts opting to listen to his friend talk about some girl he slept with back in Johannesburg. "Ay man, aren't you with Shani?", Tyrone asked the boy after recovering from his trance. "I mean not exclusively. We have fun", Mike responded with a shrug. "Fine, but does she know that?", Tyrone asked now getting pissed off. He wasn't going to let him play around with his friend's heart.
"Preshani is a cute girl man, but everyone knows I don't do exclusive", he said with a chuckle after noticing his friend's tone change. "If you want to fuck around that's cool, but you have to be honest with her. Shani is family man", Tyrone explained to the boy.
Mike promised his friend he was going to speak to the girl just when the professor came in to start the lecture.
